I still haven’t gotten out there… and it’s closest to the parents’ house besides Oak Hollow.
Not true. The creek plays down the left side of 2 but it really only comes in play on your 2nd shot on 11 and your tee shot on 17.
i guess i was too busy looking at the ski slope coming down off the right side of #2 to see the creek, my apologies
i was very confused as to where the creek was when i was out there…then i saw it on the back, guess it was 11
sounds like “the river doesn’t come into play”
definitely dont have to worry about the river…it doenst come into play at all
@tigersfirehydrant make sure you throw your empty beer cans in the tobacco barn on 13…
@Fore20 as the guy I attribute to hyping up Sapona, how does this hole (14) play?

Looks like 375 on the scorecard but what does the residential approach look like?
Winding Creek talk has me exploring the maps…
that is an odd hole for sure, but gives you a couple options
first time i played it, i hit a 5 /6 iron straight over the water to the top of the fairway, then had a gap wedge into the green, stuck it and made birdie…if you are standing in the fairway, looking at the green, its a huge slope right to left, so standing on the tee box, the fairway slopes downhill towards the water
the second time i played it, i hit a 3w over the trees on the left in front of the fairway and was left with like 65 or so, up the hill into the green…made par
the tee box is elevated, so slopes down towards the pond, obviously and then once you clear the pond it works back up the hill…
It definitely looks tempting to take the second option, but I probably easier to take an short iron in than have to explain to a mom why you nuked her kid in the pool or backyard.
I don’t like that tee shot… if it’s anything like the elevation at Lexington…
unless you hit a big hook left, assuming you are RH, that house/pool doesnt come into play IMO
if you arent going straight over the water, the play is to take it right over that grouping of trees on the left
when i took the short cut last time, i didnt quite make it to the fairway and hit my 2nd out of the rough as i was a little left of the intended line
its 100% a must play course around the triad though…you can get on out there for like $45 on a saturday am or like $27 for their weekday afternoon rate which is a steal
hook is definitely not in the arsenal. I’ve always gone to LGC, I didn’t realize Sapona was semi-private until you brought it up in the past. Definitely on the list for next time I’m in town.
LGC is a great vibe man, really dig it out there
sapona doesnt quite have the vibe/soul LGC does, but its a very solid course in its own right and they have some really good bermuda greens out there…the conditioning as a hole is solid and its a big more challenging of a course than LGC
you should definitely pull driver on that whole and let it fly then!
LGC has great old guy vibes, maybe because I always play with my grandpa - we spend half the round shooting the shit with a bunch of his buddies and smoking a lot of Reds.
haha agreed man…its like going to bojangles at 930 on a tuesday morning and seeing the table full of old guys sitting around, shooting the shit, drinking coffee talking about life
i so look forward to living that life one day
I got an 8:30 foursome reserved at Tanglewood Champions tomorrow. Non of the foursome can make it now. Anybody want it before I cancel it?
This hole was much more daunting when first built and you had to hit persimmon and balata. When I first played it in 1976 it was a beast into the wind and cool Soring temps. Now not so much. Sapona a fine course. I loved it when a freshman in college (1976) and still do.
Tough to find a more vege friendly town than Wilmington in coastal NC. The wings at Copper Penny might be worth the moral compromise
Any suggestions for something in between Charlotte and the mountains for a Sunday round? Don’t want to go all the way to Asheville or Boone but would like to get a little ways out of town.
