Roll Call: North Carolina

I think I like Beaufort Club a little better, just because it wasn’t 100% housing when I played, I know they have new ownership now and supposedly the quality is improving (wasn’t bad before though), but that might also mean the neighborhood is being built out as well.

Thanks good to know. Definitely leaning there right now.

Lord I didn’t even know about Greensboro National. Definitely need to get out there.

youre around WS, right?

G Nat is up in summerfield and kind of in the middle of no where, but played it like 3 weeks ago and the greens were pure AF

bermuda fairways should be coming in real nicely right now and the bent greens should still be very good

also i just googled your name and found your IG and sent you a follow…holler

I think that’s where I’m at too. I’m sure it’s been the same thing in Raleigh (I used to live right off Jones Franklin), but during the pandemic any decent tee times are booked up the Monday before the next weekend. With golf buddies who are extremely non-committal it’s hard to reliably get out there, that seemed like part of the allure. Charlotte National has been awesome because it’s not got any of the online tee times and probably has less attention because of it, and they’ve let us walk Saturday/Sunday mornings for $25. I think they’re about to stop that privilege though.

Definitely walk as much as possible. Goal for this year was to walk 25% of the time. I’m at like 75% year-to-date.

Monday is a big work deadline so took off the day after. I’ll be out somewhere first thing in the morning (and maybe another 18 after lunch)

Check out Pine Island, very reasonable initiation and reasonable monthly. They have tiered young executive membership program as well

awesome man…figured that was the case but just wanted to throw it out there

im a big fan of the evening 18 this time of year and usually get a round in with buddies at jamestown once a week, going off at like 5 of 515 but cant do it right now with the cart situation

hopefully they get back to full schedule here shortly

I’ll have to look into that. Not too far from me, just a quick shot up 485. The Junior monthly isn’t bad at all.

Not all semi-private clubs are created equally. Depending on state and local regulations, some must offer a small percentage of time to the general public to maintain non-profit status. They are almost always stock-owned, member owned clubs with non-profit status. This is highly dependent upon state and local regulation so, those types of clubs tend to exist in clusters.

I’m in Virginia just over the state line from Mount Airy. They seem to be much more prevalent in Virginia than North Carolina. I know of 5 similar type clubs within an hour drive of my house. All in Virginia. Can’t think of a single one in North Carolina.

I was there a week ago, a bit rough around the edges which is normal for a muni that gets as much play as they do but the greens are super shaggy this time of year, it’s like putting in a fairway. They have bent and just can’t keep them rolling like some of the other bent courses in the area.

I enjoy the layout though, a nice walk by the lake.

Those courses are always slow. I’m not sure if the “full golfing privileges” at the sister courses means the rounds are completely free, but if so, if you play these places once a week, it would essentially be worth it. However, I’m a walker, so if you’re adding on a cart fee, it may not seem like as good a deal in the end. Have only played Springfield once but I don’t think it was easily walkable like Ft. Mill.

Another good point. I enjoy walking and have been able to do it a lot more during the lockdown, but looking at the memberships at these places it’s not always obvious how mandatory the cart fee is or how friendly they are to weekend walkers

@CLTReid Second this, I have a number of friends who are members there, I wish there was a comparable course here in Raleigh, I’d be on it in no time.

exactly.

creeping right into the hardest time of the year for the maintenance folks out there at OH.

they have to keep the greens so shaggy and wet to combat the heat and disease it really ruins it for me

Thanks @Jeff_M

I wonder if they’ll try and get the greens at Oak Hollow rolling a bit with the tournament over Father’s Day weekend.

Yall think it would be better to try to play tobacco road July 3 or Jul 5 for a guy coming in from about 4 hours north?

I think about it every time I get behind a slow group
