So what you’re saying is you could get me a discount?
If you don’t mind, I’m gonna use this info for my roanokevalleygolf IG page
I also gotta admit I did not know that about Monty (moved here in 2007, oh the irony Sixcat)
RCC I was aware of, but damn that places needs a refurb like woa
Sounds like he needs to change his company though rolling with that crew
Yeah he is. He played at CofC as well. Other guy played at ECU
I don’t mind. Everything I know came from the guys from the Roanoke Valley Golf Hall of Fame.
Just checked out your IG page and gave it a follow. I remember Coutryside well! I was in college at Virginia Western and walked on to Countryside as a single one day. I was paired with an elderly man and had an absolute blast. We played almost every Wednesday morning for the next 5 or 6 years until he passed away. Miss playing with old Elwood!
One morning Elwood hit his approach on a short par 3 over a pond. You can still see the outline of the cart path, tee box and green on Google Maps (hopefully the link works). He pulled his tee shot left, it rattled around the apple tree still visible above the green. The ball fell out of the tree, rolled down the hill, hit the flag stick and fell right into the cup. Elwood smiled and said “sun shines on a dogs ass every once in a while and no scorecard has room to draw pictures!”
I just sent a text to my main golfing dude, he went to Northside HS and graduated in 08, he worked the counter part time at countryside during the summer and stuff too. Will see if he remembers Elwood. That maybe the best story I’ve heard from old days though…still really tough seeing the old layout of 581 and realizing not only did the city not do anything with project, the course was breaking even/making enough to stay on its own two feet until they closed it.
I believe Elwood passed away in 2004, maybe 2005. Really nice old guy. I enjoyed playing with him and learned a lot about the game and about life from him. He would always say “never fear the man that can hit his 5-iron 200 yards. Fear the man that can hit his 5-iron with control!”
It’s good to know someone other than my fiance is recognizing the tell tale signs of severe addiction.
Sounds like I need to meet @ColoniusFunk… this sounds like how people talk about me. Are you Triad-based?
Nope, I’m in the triangle, but there have been times when I’ve been known to travel for golf. The inlaws are in High Point so I was able to talk my way into tagging along with @Fore20 and his crew for a round when we played oak hollow.
Aka every week
I live in High Point and work in Kernersville.
That’s right I think we talked about Oak Hollow when I first joined on here…we still need to get up and play sometime!
@ColoniusFunk where do you play in Triangle? I’m not a big driver (actually hate it so much) but @Double_Bogey_Dave has convinced me to come to Tobacco Road a couple times. The closest to Raleigh I’ve played was Lochmere last year, but I want to get to Brier Creek soon.
I’m sorry to hear you played Lochmere.
Chances are if you show up to TR, @ColoniusFunk Will be there…
Lol we were just happy to be able to sneak out and play. Had PM off during ACC tournament in Cary so got out there and knocked it around. If I remember, I liked the front better. There was a tough par 3 with water short right that was cool. No real interest in playing it again but it served its purpose for $25 lol
@Fore20 that’s tough for me then as I’m 0-2. Guess I just gotta keep showing up on the weekends and my day will come…
who’s played the challenge recently?
I played it about 6 weeks ago. It was in good shape. The new ownership has done wonders for the place.
