The Carolinas RACDG is social distancing tomorrow for 36 holes at Southern Pines and Tobacco Road. We have three foursomes going at SPGC, and two foursomes at TR.
We have a last minute opening for one⌠9:24-9:43 tee times at Southern Pines, and 2:50-3:00 at Tobacco Road. Reach out if interested in both or either.
Meet golf bros, play Ross and Strantz in the same day.
I splurged a bit on a tool from Johnston Gray a while ago as a birthday gift to myself, best divot tool I have. Itâs quite a bit smaller than most of whatâs out there as well, so it fits nicely in the pocket. Plus they are based out of Charlotte, so itâs cool to support a local small shop
Not this year. Have played it many times. Love it. Never played it well but look forward to going soon. We usually go up in June. Donât know why we donât go more. I suspect it is empty during the week.
Does pinehurst have any replay or second round rates, or is it straight off the rack for all rounds not included in a package? Thinking about coming down solo after our trip got cancelled in April.
Pretty sure they have a replay rate - Iâve tacked on afternoon rounds on #1 a couple times and recall thinking it was a steal. May be a little different for the premier courses (#4 and #8, certainly #2) but Iâve had awesome times on the âlesserâ course - you really get to know the place.
Gets more weekday play than you might imagine. Many locals (myself included) play the majority of our golf on weekday afternoons while the retired sect play weekday mornings. And this area has a large percentage of retirees who bounce between Florida and the mountains. Warmer in Florida during the winter, cooler in the mountains during the summer.
Oh, and plenty of quality golf very nearby with Olde Mill, Draper, Cross Creek, Blue Ridge, Great Oaks and Primland.
Love me some draper, @Fore20 and Iâve been trying to get to cross creek for a bit too. Great Oaks maybe the best value in our part of the state, greens are NOOOOOICE.
If you ever wanna play up in Roanoke, lmk, member out at Ashley Plantation
My wife and I lived in Roanoke from 1999 to 2007. Our oldest daughter was born there. Moved back to my hometown when an opportunity presented itself that I couldnât pass up. Was a member at Botetourt for much of that time and have played Ashley many times. Hidden Valley is probably the best layout in Roanoke but they have made some terrible business decisions. Ole Monterey has a history most people in SWVA arenât familiar with and would be surprised by. If only it were better cared for, that history would be a selling point for the club.
I will let you know next time Iâm around Roanoke. If youâre ever up this way, let me know. I play most of my golf out of Blue Ridge Country Club these days. Three minutes from home. Play almost every afternoon.
Ole Monterey was designed by William S. Flynn in 1920 at around the same time he designed Lancaster Country Club in Pennsylvania. Which makes Roanoke somewhat unique given they have authentic Flynn and Tillinghast designed courses in such close proximity. A list of Flynnâs designs can be found in the links provided. The converted clubhouse was Colonial William Flemingâs home. He and his wife are buried on the property. Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson can be seen playing Ole Monterey in old photos from the 50âs and 60âs. Iâm not sure if the club is still letting people see those or if they have been preserved someplace. I havenât lived in that area since 2007 so, itâs been a while.
The bones of the original layout are still there. Itâs a shame someone canât restore it back to what it once was.
