Roll Call: New Zealand

Just moved over to Christchurch from Manchester, England. Also just signed up to the nest/refuge. Seems pretty dead in here, any recommendations?!

Move to Melbourne?

In all seriousness, there’s an ANZAC thread with more of a trans-Tasman flavour, and i think there’s a few in there who’ve managed to organise rounds and share ideas.

I just lurk the NZ thread because I have grand plans of golfing over there every time i am over in AKL for work

:joy: it’s a little late for that but I’m sure I’ll get over there since I’m in the right hemisphere now

Ha, yeah the NZ thread is pretty dead, so like @BaconFingers says, most of the action is in the ANZAC thread. There’s just me and @gentles as the regular kiwi posters and we’re both in Wellington…

Having said that I’ve been trying to sort a Chch trip for work for ages now, so if I can get it done in the next month before daylight savings end I’ll let you know and we can get a few holes in!

Very very dead which is part of the reason why I’ve never popped my head out. I live in Christchurch. Happy to try and catch up for a weekend round sometime if you’re keen?

Some interesting ideas on your list. I’m trying out ā€œdoing other things besides golfā€ for this trip.

If you’re driving I would try get Paraparaumu beach on there, it’s one of the few true links courses and in my view the best outside of the American style resort courses (kidnappers Tara iti kauri cliffs)

Is it worth 6 additional hours in the car?

Depends what else you’re doing on your trip. Wellington is the capital of New Zealand and a beautiful city (biased). with a full afternoon you could visit the parliament buildings, the national museum of New Zealand, and do a tour of Weta workshop where all the lord of the rings props were designed and made.

If you’re just here for golf then It’s a big detour. @sliceroulette is a member at Royal Wellington, which is the best course closer to the city

Pretty solid list!

I don’t have much to add to @gentles comments. I take it you’re flying from Napier to Christchurch and picking up a car from there? It’s a lovely drive from CHC to Queenstown.

I am circling back to Auckland. Then doing AKL-ZQN.

Swing your swing and all that…but that’s a lot of backtracking!

I have an opportunity to play 2 times in the northern part of the north island. Based on availability and avoiding unnecessary time driving opposite directions, my options are

  1. play Kauri Cliffs Day 1 > Te Arai North Day 2
  2. play Te Arai South Day 1 > Te Arai North Day 2

Any advice?

Hey, when are you boots on the ground here?

Depends really. Six-hour round trip from Te Arai to Kauri Cliffs…you’ll see some nice scenery and if you weren’t pushed for time, taking SH12 on the way back will see you through Waipoua Forest where the giant kauri are. It’s a very special place.

I don’t know a huge amount about Te Arai, so couldn’t really comment on how much of a similar experience you’re likely to get on North v South courses.

Mid-December. Just in time for peak rates and the two night minimum at Te Arai.

All the golf is booked, along with a few other activities. Trying to increase my fitness level.

Got it. Will definitely check out that route-thanks!

I’ll be flying into KKE, so driving south towards Auckland. That will help with some of the travel investment.

Perhaps my primary question is - how worth it is the south course over the north course? I think the north course just opened recently.
