Roll Call: New Orleans

I haven’t lived in Covington long but I mainly play Covington Country Club when I play here. Most of my friends live in Slidell so we play Oak Harbor and Pinewood a good bit.

Covington is OK, a little pricey for what you are getting in my opinion but it is the only semi-private course around. Fairways are nice and most of the greens are in good enough condition.

Abita Springs closed at the end of February, which is good because they just let the place go, and they are trying to sell it. I played there about 8 months ago and it was shit. Two holes were closed and it didnt look like the tee boxes had been mowed in weeks.

The only other course around I have played is Money Hill and that was years ago, although a guy I work with is a member there and he says that the course is in great shape.

The only other two are Tchefuncta and Beau Chene, both are private and around the same price range for memberships the last time I checked. I know the pro at Tchefuncta and have meant to take a tour of the course and facility since I moved to Covington but with a new house and now baby on the way I haven’t had time and now I doubt I will be able to justify the membership, even though it isn’t that expensive.

Hit me up if you are in the area and have any questions about anything.

Edit: Money Hill is private as well.

Played Oak Harbor for the first time a few weeks ago. I was shook by how much water is on that course. Really enjoyed the course though. Definitely looking forward to playing it again. Never heard of Pinewood though. I’ve played Covington CC once, but haven’t gotten around to it again.

Abita used to be a fun little track. I loved the layout, but after playing it once they let go of the course I was disgusted and never went back.

Do you know the membership rates for Tchefuncta? Kids are in the distant future for me so I plan on taking full advantage of that.

I spend every other weekend and most week days up there. I’ll let you know next time I’m up and if you’re free we can go get a few holes in.

Congrats on the upcoming child. Cheers!

And thanks mate:) I hope I get to play some after. Not sure they make car seats for carts…

Meet me at the man cave with a case of beer and I’m sure we can come up with something!

Well the wedding I was attending to bring me down to New Orleans the weekend of April 3rd got postponed with the virus and my wife’s job makes her quarantine for 14 days if she goes to Orleans/Jefferson Parish so it seems I wont be making it down for the Roll Call throwdown.

New golfer here. Not NOLA, but close enough; Im down in Terrebonne Parish. Used to play Sugarland (RIP), I love playing Tidelands down Galliano, but I’d like to find new places to play, and maybe make some friends to play golf with. Just look for a guy with long hair, a “Tailer Trash Fly FIshing” hat, and some vidja game music.

I’m intrigued by the music choice. Come play at Cypress Lakes in Destrehan sometime.

Speaking of - anyone want to pick up a socially distant skins game at Oak Harbor sometime? One person per cart. Let’s geaux.

@Wolfhearted shiiiiiittt you’re in Point-Aux-Chenes?!?! Let’s go fishing instead!

When Im not slicing balls on the fairway or working my tail off, Im fly fishing down there. If you see a plastic seafoam green skiff with some long haired cooyon on it, that’s me!

Ive thought of checking out Cypress lakes or Oak Harbor. I just recently got to check out Grand Ridge and fell in love with the course.

Haven’t played Grand Ridge. Recently moved to Covington, so I’ve been playing the hell out of Oak Harbor. IMO: front 9 is trigger worthy, but love the back.
Once quarantine is over holler at me and we’ll hit em.

Heck yeah podnah!
Debating Grand Ridge again this weekend, or LA Tour. Tour is way closer but more expensive, vs cheaper but over an hour away. Hmmmm choices…

Greetings from Harahan.

Recently moved down to NOLA from New York about a year and a half ago and joined up at TPC about a month ago. Figured it was close, great practice facilities, and with working from home needed something more flexible than golfnow tee time scrounging. Loving the place so far, my favorite track in the area, never saw it before the reno but it’s pretty mint right now.

I’ve gotten around the area in my time down here and have played -

Audubon, City Park South, City Park North, JoeyB, Lakewood, English Turn, Oak Harbor, Stonebridge, Timberlane, Grand Ridge, Riverlands, Belle Terre, Cooper Mill

On my list to knock out that I haven’t yet are La Tour and Carter.

Sorry for the long intro, it’s rainy and I’m bored. Once this Corona stuff is all over would love to get out with some NLU guys, looking forward to any Roll Call Throwdowns.

Welcome!
Im hoping to be able to get up that way to play sometime soon. Maybe we need a group get together when things start reopening. Im not a good golfer at all, but I’d love to meet yall and maybe learn a thing or two.

TPC is really playable, once you block out some of Pete Dye’s intimidation tactics it’s a fun and open course.

How’s La Tour? I’ve heard nothing but good things since I moved down here, just haven’t wanted to make the hour drive to play solo ha.

La Tour is so close to me, but its like 70 bucks a day for open play. I almost have to decide if its more worth it to drive all the way to Patterson or up toward NOLA to play or just pony up the money.

I miss Sugarland, right across the bayou from them. 20 dollars after 2pm, with a gorgeous 18 hole set up. First real golf course I ever played at.

Man, you picked a good club to join up at. Love TPC. Peep my post of playing there when they reopened after reno (Where did you play this week and tell us about your round).

You have played some of the best courses since you moved down here. I recently moved up to Covington so I have been playing the hell out of Oak Harbor. I plan on joining up at Tchefuncta Country Club once I get some finances straight with the new house. All refugees welcome once I join up. Give Cypress Lakes in Destrehan a whirl when you get the chance. Greens could be in better condition, but not a lot of traffic on the course. $60 for 18, but you do not have to pay again to hit another 18.

Highly recommend Carter Plantation. Such a great track. Amazing that so many people sleep on this course. 100% worth the drive to Springfield. Once you get done hitting all the course on your list down here - I highly recommend dipping your toes in the golf scene on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. I went to high school in Bay St. Louis, MS and fell in love with the whole area. Whenever you want to go I am totally down. I am a total crackhead for hitting the courses on the Gulf Coast.

We had a bunch of muni/public courses like that where I’m from in NY (Bout an hour north of the city) $30-35 to walk with sub $20 twilight rates but I feel like that mid-tier golf price is lacking in Nola. Golf is kinda overpriced down here. JoeyB is perfectly priced, everything else is kinda meh. You can find some deals here and there but it’s difficult.

Definitely one of the reasons I just bit the bullet and joined up at TPC. At least I know I’m getting quality and a marginally good pace of play considering it’s so crazy high priced that it scares people over to City Park South or English Turn.

NOW - on to LaTour. That course is the definition of a hidden gem. About to photo drop the hell out of this thread. I played there last year for the ES&H 2 man scramble. Played with the guy that I buy all of my forklifts from and we shot a 66. Such an awesome f*!king track. Wide open fairways, great greens, tricky par 3s. Makes you put some strategy into the par 4s. Although the fairways are wide, you really have to think about where you are landing the ball to have the best approach into the greens. If you blow it wide right or left you are hitting out of some serious grass to get the ball back in play. My favorite part of the course is the fact that you are literally on a piece of property smack between sugar cane fields. You are driving along and then BOOM she appears. Looking back over the pictures from last year gave me a sense of euphoria from my day out there. Let’s send em soon boys.

Thats my big issue. Im not in the financial straits to get a membership anywhere, and most of the munis and smaller courses in my area are not very good. Houma Golf Club course is a nightmare to me; water on every hole including a par 3 with the green effectively on a small island, fairways with big cracks cause the ground is so dry, and course seems to always be under construction. Tidelands is pretty good, but its a fairly long course for someone like me who is just learning to hit the ball far.
Im willing to travel a ways if it means I can have a fun course.
