Butterfield was really rough for a few years but getting better now. Painted Dunes is always in good shape so I play there quite a bit and at Coronado CC. Reach out anytime you’re in town and want to play.
Yeah PD is always nice, and careful, might just take you up on the CCC offer next time I’m in town lol Reach out to @GolfGuyRN if you’re ever in Las Cruces. And @Ghost_of_Ty_Webb is a recent transplant to the Sun City.
I live right down the street from Painted Dunes
Nice, let’s get a group going some time. Either at PD or Coronado. Happy to have you as a guest.
possible stupid question, what’s Albuquerque and Santa Fe like in late December / early January? Looking to take a trip with the wife and looking at options and New Mexico came up.
Winter is generally pretty nice here. Sunny winter days are some of the best weather conditions of the entire year IMO. There is always the potential for snow, moreso in SF than ABQ. Can’t really predict that more than a week or two out though. What kind of trip are you thinking?
Not quite sure, I’ll be honest have no idea what to even do at all. Kinda want to see something new and I do love some good scenery. Might be a long weekend kind of thing
Gotcha - Santa Fe is very cool for that kind of thing. Meow Wolf is a must see. And the food is quite good.
Is Marty Sanchez walkable?
Yes it’s an easy walk (other than being at altitude). Unfortunately Santa Fe just got a foot of snow ![]()
any indoor golf places around Santa Fe? lol
getting on a plane in a couple of hours and trying to decide if I should bring the sticks or not.
have all day Saturday to kill while the wife works a gig
Absolutely beautiful day today in the City of the Crosses. Football season (for me) is winding down, which means it’s golf season. Went out today to knock the rust off. Last summer (‘23) was so hot they lost the course and haven’t really gotten it back. The fairways were overseeded about a month ago and the course looks like shit at the moment, but hopefully it’s worth it.
Greetings - been a member but one of my first posts
I moved from Texas to Santa Fe in June 2024 after visiting here for 15 years. It’s been a nice change to be a resident and live here and not be thinking about when it’s time to leave.
Marty Sanchez Links de Santa Fe - the city of Santa Fe public course is great - very walkable and recently Troon has come along and improved the conditions. There’s a great men’s group that plays a skins game on Wednesdays and Saturdays and a nice group of guys of a wide age range - usually 12-20 guys for each session
Black Mesa - the crown jewel of northern New Mexico - I have heard it was in bad shape 5-6 years ago but now it’s in good shape. I’ve now played it 7-8 times and surprisingly it is actually walkable in the fall/winter/spring - it’s a very hard walk - but I wouldn’t do it in the middle of the summer
Santa Fe Country Club - semi-private and you can get a tee time but members have the best times - more open and parkland but a nice alternative
Twin Warriors - nice course south of Santa Fe that might be warmer than in town - after recently snow storm, Twin opened several days before SF courses since they’re at a lower elevation
Sandia - connected to the casino complex and definitely a “resort” course with lots of fairways that slope to the middle so keep it relatively straight and you’ll be fine but still some nice challenges
That’s my report as a now resident. Hit me up if you’re interested in playing sometime. I almost always play the Wednesday men’s skin game at Marty - it’s now 11:30 a.m. in the winter - and I sometimes play with a regular group on Sundays at Black Mesa.
Great report. How is Cochiti these days? I made my first par there when I was 7 and love going and playing when the opportunity comes up.
I’ve only played Cochiti once and it was in rough shape - apparently the superintendent left several years ago and maintenance has not kept up. According to others, Cochiti 6-7 years ago was in great shape and Black Mesa was in rough shape, and now it’s the other way around.
I know it’s been 16 days and this is crazy talk on the refuge but… if you’re willing to not play golf on a trip, I’ve done Santa Fe a few times in January and it rocks every time. Phenomenal food, great art and museums, some hiking, 10,000 Waves, and a lot of spicy margaritas and/or Santa Fe IPA’s. If you’re wanting a trip to recharge, it hits the spot.
Edit: if you like skiing, don’t sleep on that there either.
9 years ago in May I made my solo golf trip to Santa Fe as it was about 7 hours from me and offered mountains, golf, and a derivative of Mexican food. I drove from Munday, Texas to Santa Fe, then went and hit some balls and played the short course at Marty Sanchez. First day I went to Cochiti and played 36. Day 2 featured a hike, breakfast, nap, then Black Mesa in the afternoon (when conditions were excellent). Day 3 repeated that, then an afternoon round at Paa-Ko on a free “birthday” round. On Day 4 I drove back but stopped and played Rawls where I shot my first even par round.
Throw in great food, gas, and cheap lodging (s/o King’s Rest Court Inn) and I spent $737. Insanely great time and I quickly got a group together of other Strapped-Adjacent golfers to go back over the next four years.
