Hooper is in beautiful Walpole which is about 20 minutes NW of Keene.
Looks about 1.75 hrs from me. You down to play during the week next week?
I will be gone Tuesday & Wednesday but any other time I am around!
Could possibly do Thursday
Calling all NH Refugees. I am going to be playing Owls Nest (Jack Nicklaus design and a fun mountain course!!) in Thornton NH on Tuesday August 11 while on vacation. We have room for 2 more if anyone is up that way and wants to join for 18 around 8 am. I can’t make the exact tee time till a week before but it will be sometime around 8 am. Anyone interested let me know.
Just played there on Sunday… beautiful views and the course is in great condition. It was my first time, so I wish I could join you for some redemption. Enjoy!
Thanks. I play it every year on vacation. Love it! Highly recommend if anyone is ever in that area.
So in watching the NLU crew’s latest video of Tron becoming a master club fitter, in class he is seated next to the head pro from the Kingswood Golf Club in Wolfeboro, NH. It’s my home club, and really made it seem like a small world. I am going to have swing by the club after work to congratulate her on her new found fame.
officially made my move to NH! wanted to follow up and say i got out for a quick 9 after work yesterday… No vehicle yet so I humped the bags on my bike down to Pease to play the back. Interesting routing… probably looks a lot different pre-COVID.
now the my plight to conquer NH golf can officially begin!
Welcome to the Granite State! There are tons of great courses to play, and living on the Seacoast isn’t a bad place to be.
If you ever make it out west, reach out and come play Hooper Golf Course in Walpole.
New to the NEST and just saying a quick hi. Couldn’t not join after following the pod and youtube for a few months.
Definitely excited to be part of a community to play some rounds and have a few laughs. I’ll keep my eyes open for any events around us, keep rollin’ it.
Yes, it’s narrow, and yes it punishes you hard for any errant shot, and yes, the greens are really short, but DAMN if this isn’t an amazing view for an approach shot.
Hales location golf course.
Hey guys, coming up to NH for work next week. Landing in Manchester on Monday 8/24 at 12:30. I don’t need to be in the office until Tuesday morning, so I’m gonna tee it up somewhere on Monday.
A little bit of quick research has me thinking I’ll try to play Montcalm, but I’m open to any suggestions/recommendations. I’d also be happy to have the company of any refugees.
I won’t be in NH when you’re there, but highly recommend Montcalm! It’s been in great shape and it’s a dramatic piece of property (as far as NH golf courses go). I played twice when I was in NH a few weeks back and can’t wait to play it again.
Another course worth checking out is Sunapee (which is private but allows some guest play). It’s an old Ross design. If you’re trying to get 27 holes in, you could hop over to Carter Country Club after playing Montcalm. It’s a dinky 9 hole muni-type course, but the conditioning isn’t too bad and it’s a Ross design with some charm.
Hey welcome to beautiful NH!
Never played Montcalm but all my friends who have say it is amazing. But if you are in the mood for a drive to Walpole (about 1.5 hours from Manchester) Hooper Golf Course is, in my totally biased opinion, and absolutely amazing 9 hole course - Tom Doak said it was the 2nd best 9 hole course in America.
Thanks, guys. I wasn’t able to get on Montcalm, so I ended up at Carter. Conditions were pretty scruffy except for the greens, which were soft, but still rolling fast enough that you had to be careful about leaving yourself below the hole.
I ended up playing two loops around (which is exhausting for a 50 year old dude carrying his bag) and really enjoyed the second crack at some of those holes. I’m already looking forward to trying to get some more holes in later this week if I can get there after work once or twice.
Glad you got out there! It’s definitely got the Ross bones. You have to miss in the right spots! Hope you can get out again this week.
Played 9 more at Carter yesterday, but I guess it was league night, so it was busy and the pace of play was brutal.
Wrapped things up in the office a little early today and had time to run over to Montcalm. What a treat! Those greens are among the best I’ve ever seen. Absolutely pure.
It was honestly one of my favorite golf experiences in years. Fun course, beautiful setting. Five out of five stars from me.
Walking and carrying my bag was tough, and probably would have been impossible on a hot day, but on a cloudy 57 degree day I’m glad I did it.
Walking and carrying at Montcalm is a job well done. It’s a mountain. I took a cart and still had to ice. Best greens I’ve played in NH and the view from #1 green is pretty amazing.
Hello all - been on the NLU bandwagon via YT/podcast content for a while, but new to the Refuge section of the site. Usually don’t get past the Merch section as my first stop. Anyway, great to see some NH chatter already in motion! I’m new at Portsmouth CC this year, perhaps a Seacoast area NLU chapter meeting there someday…also love the Montcalm references - agree that place is a gem!
