I was hoping to get down there this upcoming week and play it, but with all of this rain the next few days I worry it might be soaked.
This is what I found last year in July as well. Fairways were firm and fast, green complexes are awesome…the rough/fescue areas were completely unplayable. Like, ball goes in…you have no chance of finding it let alone playing it.
If they got that figured out, it could be a great course. Until I hear some positive reviews on the maintenance front, I would not put it high on my list of courses to play.
Question for those in Metro Detroit; how walkable are the Huron-Clinton Metroparks courses? For reference we’re talking about Huron Meadows, Lake Erie, Stony Creek, Kensington, Hudson Mills, Indian Springs, and Willow Metroparks.
I haven’t played Stony Creek or Erie, but all the others are an easy walk. Lyon Oak might be the hardest but that’s not saying much.
I like Lyon Oaks a lot. The rest are kind of meh though.
2nd. Lyon Oaks is a very fun course. Definitely walkable.
For those interested in Stoatin Brae, walked it yesterday afternoon/evening in a light but constant rain. Conditioning was on point, tough with no roll out though.
Playing Arcadia soon! Pretty excited, but also a bit worried as rain is threatening… Wanted to get everyone’s thoughts; Am I cheap if I don’t want to pay the money to play it in the rain? Obviously love golfing and would love to play this course, but I’ve got this vision of playing Arcadia on a beautiful day.
I’ve got a tee time there Saturday, which is also looking a little rainy. It’s not my first time there, so I am going to play no matter what, but I could definitely understand the desire to wait until it’s nice outside for your first round. Arcadia also tends to get windy along with the rain, so conditions are tough…and cold.
All that said, I’ve always had really good experiences with their staff issuing rain checks. Played late last season and they offered me a 9-hole check at the turn just because they thought I’d only get a couple more holes in.
I’m going to be up in Grand Rapids visiting my fiancé may 23-may 30 if anyone wants to get out and play. I’m gonna hit up the mines, pilgrims, and Kaufman for sure. The other courses are TBD.
Honestly every one of them is a comfortable walk. A couple of transitions here or there that are lengthy but not red flags
I decided to walk Boulder Pointe Bluffs/Peaks yesterday, in the rain, and it was about 8.2 miles total but even with long transitions we managed a 3 ball in 3.75 hrs
Anyone have suggestions on which Devries course to play in Grand Rapids? I am coming down from Forest Dunes on my way back to IN. I was thinking Pilgrims. Would love some opinions!
Pilgrims for sure as it is right on your way. The Mine’s is the 2nd favorite option. They are closed on Sunday’s though in case that was the day you are driving through.
Between Pilgrim’s Run, The Mines, and Diamond Springs (which are all great courses) I would go Pilgrim’s 8 times out of 10. Diamond is a lot of fun, but is a bit off the beaten path. I live downtown GR, so I’ve played The Mines plenty…maybe that’s why it’s 3rd in my book (or maybe it’s the ‘closed on Sundays and no booze’ rule). To be fair, it’s been a while now since I’ve played - they might now sell drinks.
No Booze is the exact type of stuff I need to be on the lookout for. Thank you for the heads up there. Also, Pilgrims looks the most interesting. Lot of cool looking holes and it all seems to run through the woods.
I second the Pilgrims Run would be right on the way down. A plus side to the Mines is the options for food and drink after…assuming things will be opened back up. Diamond Springs is a great track. But it’s really in the middle of no where.
Diamond Springs also does not sell booze. Small trend with Devries courses…
I have played it in the rain…I just pretended it was a more “links” experience and went for it. It stopped on the back nine and it was nice to play it in both conditions.
I spent the night in the lodge so it would have been a waste to not play. I can totally understand the dilemma though…especially if you don’t get up that way very often.
Having said that, I just cancelled my TPC tee time because it’s drizzling…rescheduled for tomorrow. I’m no tough guy.
I think Pilgrims Run is great but its very similar to a lot of Michigan golf in the sense of layout amongst the forest feel where as The Mines and Diamond both feel a little more linksy and quirky if thats your cup of tee… you can not go wrong. The dude that had the no Sundays and no booze I think sold off the Mines I am not 100% but they might now do both
Anyone in need of a fourth for Monday playing somewhere near Grand Rapids? I’m in town visiting my fiance and looking for some golf.
