Roll Call: Michigan - get out and play!

Anyone ever play Birchwood Farms? All the Harbor Springs talk made me think of it. I interviewed for an assistant job in college a lifetime ago when I thought for like 5 minutes I wanted to get into the business. Been so long since I thought about this I couldn’t remember the name of the club.

Yeah I’ll be there the week prior. Would’ve enjoyed that for sure!

I think it’s still private.

It definitely is. Was just curious. Interview was in March and there was a bunch of snow on the ground. So I never actually saw the course.

It’s the Nightmare and it’s not close. Much more fun and a better course overall.

The nightmare is absolutely awesome. Love that course.

Its a fun little CC nothing I would go out of the way to see but if in the area and got a connect… its a good track with great conditions!

Happened to play with a friendly Canadian this past week who mentioned he stopped there once because it had his namesake

@tomwhita thoughts??

It was a pretty nice course today. Every hole seemed to dogleg left!

Front nine was a tighter piece of property than the back 9, yet oddly I lost my only balls on the back 9!

I’m terrible at remembering course details but your description sounds spot on. I was driving home from Chicago to Toronto and absolutely HAD to stop at a course with my last name.

Played Grand Beach Golf course today. A 1912 Tom Bendelow designed 9 hole course right in the subdivision were staying in. Shot a cool 43 which was good seeing as I couldnt get the ball off the ground the first two holes. Course still features the original greens which was pretty cool, one of them was a little punch bowl type feel which I don’t see much these days. All in a really neat course and like stepping back in time as it’s largely unmodified. Took my brother, who doesn’t golf with me and if I had to guess I’d say he shot at best mid 80s, but I wasn’t counting all those. Claimed a 5 on the par 3 9th but he hit his first two tee shots into the bushes so he was hitting 5 off the tee before he got a useable shot. Ha!

Only took a few pictures, should’ve taken more.

Fun story. I’m planning to play golf with my dad this weekend, and I thought I would give Blackheath a try as I live close by and hadn’t played there before. Go to the website, and can only make times for 4 people. So I call and figure I can make a time that way. Nope. I would have to book for 4 people and then only show up with two, but pay for 3, or wait until the day off and book then. Mind you, the website is showing most of the times for Saturday are open, so there’s lots of choice.

Then I called Boulder Pointe…

“Hi, I’d like to make a time for Saturday.”
“Look online, we only make tee times online, not over the phone.”

Seems like there are a lot of places doing this. They want to be paid upfront, which I can understand, but, it’s also bullshit if you can’t call up and make a time for 2 like you need it to be.

We should go the way of Germany and make people get a license to golf. (At least I think it’s Germany, I know some one does this over yonder)

I called a place last week to make a tee time for my wife and to book the tee time over the phone there was a $5 “convenience” fee. Booking online was free and I you didn’t have to pay until you got to the course. I get it is easier for them to manage things online but charging $5 to talk to a person asinine in my opinion if someone is already there working.

blackehath is weird like that. It’s a fun course and definitely get out there at some point (and call me cause I always want to play there), but it’s fucking annoying that they do this

Blackheath is a course I really want to play, bummer to hear what a pain in the ass it is to book. We’ll have to find a foursome sometime.

I’ve had some luck booking the 3/4 some and when I show up I just say they will pay for themselves. (Sadly they no-show) but that was a weekday midday.

Absolutely I’d be game, especially next week. They jam times so mid day weekends can make for long rounds

Yeah I’ve heard it’s very much a “get out there early” course.

I’m a schmuck with no plans the 3rd or 4th but those are the only weekdays I’d probably be able to swing unfortunately. I’m coming from Lansing so a midweek round would be tough to pull with a 90 min drive.

I haven’t booked any tee times for Sunday yet if you’re looking to get out there that soon haha
