Roll Call: Michigan - get out and play!

Butchers Union has one of the best whiskey ledger’s in the city, and is probably my favorite restaurant in downtown GR.

Second butchers union, the mitten is also a good brewery that has excellent pizza. Hopcat downtown is a bit of a staple, and I’d recommend Donkey for tacos/tequila

Anyone have suggestions around Oscoda? Heading out there for a week this summer, looking to get a round or two in.

The only course in that area I’ve played is white pine National, and I thought it was excellent. Definitely a hidden gem type course. According to google maps it’s 30 min north of oscoda.

Lakewood Shores Resort is out there. It has been years since I’ve been there, but they have 3 courses. I believe The Gailes is the highest regarded. Fun imitation links course. I think? At least I thought so last time I was there.

Okay I already made the case for white pine, but now I can’t stop thinking about how awesome it was. It’s like $45 to walk, there was absolutely nobody out there, and the course was so memorable. It truly gave me that northern Michigan golf feeling, and I find myself thinking about that course pretty often. Anyone else been there? Or am I crazy?

Those pics look great, will definitely check it out. Thanks for the tip!

Red Hawk is another option. I believe it’s comparable to White Pine National and slightly closer to Oscoda.

How am I just hearing of this course now!

Garland is another resort up there, about an hour from Oscoda. 4 courses, reasonable rates, I think I remember liking 2.5 of the courses. Monarch and Fountains IIRC.
Also Talley’s Log Cabin is a classic up north dive bar if you make it into town in Lewiston, 5 minutes from the resort.

Accommodations are probably slightly better than Lakewood, but generally wouldn’t recommend staying at either, as has been documented:

Mother of Christ it’s more water than a Florida course.

This place was in rough shape 10+ years ago. Can’t imagine it’s improved. They usually do a GroupGolfer for 2-3 rounds and overnight stay for $100 and it’s very overpriced.

Echoing other comments, Red Hawk is solid and maybe 20 minutes from Oscoda. I haven’t played White Pine in maybe 15 years but I remember enjoying it. Lakewood Shores is in Oscoda and is a no go for me, always seems to be in rough shape when I’ve played. Unfortunately options are pretty limited in the area.

Played Red Hawk and White Pine 3 years ago and enjoyed both very much. Red Hawk was really good, probably my favorite of the four. Played blackshire too and wouldn’t really recommend that one, needed some work. We played The Gaiels as well and that probably would’ve been a great course if it wasn’t pouring rain the whole time.

Just here to say that Talleys is fucking great. I’ve gotten to know some of the folks up there thru curling and the owner is just one of the best dudes on the planet.
And his wife makes absurd good baklava that I think he’s got on hand at the bar

Ravines could be very sloppy given the weather we’ve had of late (it doesn’t drain well)…if you can get out of it and play Diamond Springs instead I’d consider doing that.

You’ll enjoy Harbor Shores if you can accept that it will kick you in the nuts, as others have mentioned.

In case y’all missed it, COME OUT TO MAX 3! We are getting closer to our Roost Major with a bunch of good times on tap for both Friday and Saturday. As we get closer, hopefully some of y’all have a better idea of what your schedule is for the month and I would be pumped to get as many people as possible so we can generate as much of a donation to thegfpd.org as possible!

We have a couple pieces of merch up for sale as well, THE LAST CALL FOR THESE IS FRIDAY as I will be putting in the order to have them ready for everyone at the event. If you want to support but can’t make it, I will mail these to whomever wants them as well.

Cheers!
Jono

Also, for anyone new to the board and want to meet up with other Refugees to tee it up, jump in the slack.

The college course slant is interesting, I’ll give you that. Eagle Crest is not bad, but if you are in the area you are doing yourself a disservice if you don’t play Washtenaw GC instead of Eagle Crest. I did you a favor by looking it up, and confirmed that Concordia Ann Arbor (NAIA school) hosts a meet at Washtenaw early in the season, so technically it is, in fact, a college course.

At the risk of repeating Tourist Sauce, I don’t think I can recommend a better option after UMGC than Frida Batidos. Maybe head over to HOMES Brewery afterwards.
