If you have questions about private clubs in SE Michigan, feel free to DM me. My identity on here isn’t exactly a secret and I’d just rather not publicly comment on my perception of other clubs courses, members, dues/fees structure etc.
GR area checking in
Caddied at Red Run for a while and was then a member for a couple of years. The staff/service, members, course condition, and clubhouse are all outstanding. The club elders had an architect come in and remove tons of trees recently (including an OG center line tree). I left because of money, but if I join somewhere in the future, it won’t be there, 99% due to the changes in the course.
Welcome! Also a fellow westsider. What’s your GR course of choice?
Can’t really tell ya with conviction because I haven’t been out too much, probably 15 or less rounds last year. Just picked up golf for the first time in my life a few years ago and never really tried to get any better or take it more serious until last summer. I’d like to take lessons from someone though if you have any experience with local pros or recommendations.
I’d check out maple hill. I have had a lesson from there. But I got fit for clubs and had a really great experience. Also the shop there is a golf sickos candy store.
Waterford here, also looking to move later this year most likely to the Milford or South Lyon area. Love seeing the support for the Max event at Rackham, unfortunately I don’t think my wife will approve of my attendance given the pending arrival of our baby boy just a few weeks before the date. Guessing my 2020 number of rounds will be way down as a result of our new addition, but if any other refuge meet ups happen later in the summer I’ll try to make it work!
Love the shop there. I played the course when they opened up a few weeks ago too, not terrible for the middle of winter haha. I’ll look into it for a lesson, thanks.
Awesome trip planned!! How are you getting on at Kingsley?
I love Mike Devries’ designs, play the trio in Grand Rapids; Pilgrim’s Run, The Mines and Diamond Springs. Hoping to cross off Greywalls and Kingsley at some point.
G.R. golf is very underrated. I think it’s got future Strapped series potential. Pilgrim’s Run, Thornapple Point, The Mines. Get the boys down by the fish ladder for some b role, let Big Randy pontificate on how ungrand the rapids actually are, top notch content.
I can’t speak for him but Kinglsey Club is open to sharing their experience to non-members in my experience. I haven’t been able to play it but I’ve reached out & know other people who have received invites to play and taken advantage of it. Just need to pay the guest fee which is around $250.
That would be awesome! They might need a bump from the C suite to make budget at those courses but I would love to see the strapped boys kicking it in GR.
I think Michigan as a whole should be host to a tourist sauce season. Swing through Detroit hit 1-75 north hit a few of the northern gems. Then make a U turn and follow 131 south into GR.
you can definitely get on kingsley. did it this past august and yeah 250 was the rate plus caddie. I’d take one for at least your first loop if you can even if they’re below average (like mine was) theres enough funky spots on that course that having someone point you in the right direction then reference the yardage book. its fantastic. i’ll be back and hope to get out there twice this coming august.
I would love a Lyon Oaks (or really any metro D) meet up.
Northville resident here, awesome to see the refuge support from metro Detroiters
ditto to the comments above. i was a member at Red Run for a couple years… good club, pretty solid amount of younger members. course is even better now after all the tree work they have done in the last couple of years
Wyndgate is awful, just a personal opinion but the golf is very contrived. PH and RR are great privates in the area
Play a lot at Sanctuary Lake up in Troy. That’s where I grind on the game!
Grand Rapids resident here. Mostly play the courses owned by Watermark CC (Thousand Oaks CC and Watermark CC courses being my favorite), but I also love a few public gems near the city. Thornapple Point Golf Club and Grand Valley State University’s home course, The Meadows, are both great tracks and an awesome value for the money. Pilgrims Run gets a lot of (well deserved) love in online reviews and is definitely worth the 30 minute drive north.
Good seeing some fellow West Michiganders on the thread!
checking in from st clair shores, I play a lot of golf at northville hills one of the better public tracks in the metro area. I also love huntmore in brighton for a cheap round with really good conditions. Roseland in windsor is a great ross and is public and also dirt cheap especially with the exchange rate. love to hear any other public course suggestions within an hour of me! i’ve played almost everything that I know of so i’ll be excited and impressed if someone can recommend something i haven’t played.
Grand Rapids! Play at Cedar Chase and Egypt Valley a lot but love traveling north to Tullymore, Arcadia and The Downs.
I haven’t gotten a chance to get out to Egypt Valley Or Thousand Oaks CC. They’re private right?
Also…can you hook a brotha up??
