Roll Call - Metro NYC

Hey folks, does anyone have experience with Shipsticks to Bethpage?

Do they even allow for it? Bethpage is state run with state employees, I would be cautious about doing it unless it gets sent to the pro shop, those people seem slightly more competent.

Don’t use shipsticks. Ever.

Spooky Brook and Quail Brook aren’t memorable but they’re a good place for a round. Warrenbrook is mega tight with a handful of bad holes. Green Knoll I haven’t played but have heard stinks.

The New Jersey muni scene is pretty brutal for non-county card holders and getting tee times. You basically have to be on the inner circle or get super lucky with a cancellation for early weekend rounds. This goes for basically every county course

Thanks, helpful

Red is great and if you’re a single, you should be able to walk up and play that day.

Hey gang, I have two days coming up in Poughkeepsie and I’m trying to choose two: Centennial, Links at Union Vale, and James Baird. Any other courses in the area I should be playing?

Lakes-Fairway tee times are the only available at Centennial for their afternoon fee ($85) - is it that much better than the $35 round at James Baird? I’m pretty set on my second round being Links at Union Vale.

Links at Union Vale is the best course in the Hudson Valley by far. I would just play there twice. I’ve never played Baird but I know some friends that enjoy that place.

Another place to look at is Casperkill. It hasn’t rained in a while around here so the course should be in decent shape (some holes get destroyed by rains). A couple of silly holes but it’s a lot of fun

Centennial is fine. Good condition, nice facility. I have no strong feelings one way or the other on that one

Thank you! Honestly not a bad idea, I hate seeing a new course and being left thinking ā€œman I’d love to give that another shotā€ without knowing when I’ll be back. It doesn’t look like I can make a tee time for the first day (Monday) at LUV or I would do it.

Looking to invite a few fellow Members up to the C Suite and invite you out to Seawane Club in 2025. This is an Original Dev. Em. Club that has gone through some great changes with Stein Design to restore the club in the past few years. They are starting a project on our signature 16th hole this week which should open for play by April.

Lets get a few members ready and we can schedule some dates as we get closer.

Just realized I never did a follow up to thank you @HibernatingBear.

Links at Union Vale was awesome - their new logo done by alternategolflogos is so sick and wish they’d had some clubhead covers in the shop with it on there. Was lucky to play the round with a retired guy from Connecticut who plays there often, he helped me navigate around the course for one of my better rounds of the year. Favorite stretch of holes might have been 6/7/8 - that green on 7 was amazing. Only gripe are 1/18 being a less than driver forced layup, which doesn’t scream ā€œlinksā€ course. However, I did love being forced to plan the remaining shots on 18 and it was an awesome finishing hole. Our best local ā€œlinksā€ course in Rochester has a finishing hole that is just a 180 yard tee shot and then 130 second shot over a pond, so it could be worse.

Absolutely loved the course, will plan to play it again on our next trip down to NYC.

James Baird was a fun muni, but my god the back 9 was so much harder than the front. The 3-hole stretch 11/12/13 were a bear. 12 was set up at 210 yards through a pretty tight window of trees for that type of distance on a par 3. 13 sitting at 530 yards with an elevated green protected by some punishing bunkers was a tough hole as well - highly recommend just pulling your ball from the bunkers which were more rock than sand when I was there.

If I had to go again, I’d skip Baird and play one of the others you had recommended. I’d love to have tried Inness but for 9 holes that’s a hefty price tag.

I’ve been to Seawane a bunch for my last job and have played it a couple of times. It’s such a great golf course.

What’s the change to 16? I follow the super on instagram and saw mention of a green expansion but that was it.

The work they did on #9 was awesome.

Green will extend all the way to the water and they changed the humps in the back to short turf.

Heading to the course next week will let you know of other changes

@jdrucksports would love to join! Thanks for the offer, hope we can get something worked out.

I sent a message to the club hoping to get a society day out there for us, but no one answered. I’m still hoping some day the UK model of golf will slowly works its way into the USA!

Seeking Connecticut experts.

I’m advancing through an interview process that would require relocation from the Chicago suburbs to CT. Job would be located in the Trumbull/Shelton area.

For those that live generally around this area, how would you rate it for a mid 30s couple with two kids (5 & 3)? Already know that taxes are high but they are in Illinois too so that’s already built into our models.

What communities would we be targeting for great schools, strong community feel, and a reasonable (less than 30 min) commute to the office? What other things do we need to consider about life in CT before possibly pulling the trigger? How expensive is it to join some of the clubs in the area?

I’m not sure who’s still around the Refuge in CT. @VinnyCal75 the floor is yours

I don’t have kids but for me personally it was a wonderful place to grow up. Also many of my friends who do have kids are quite happy to be raising their families here.

Monroe, Shelton, Seymour are the kind of towns I’d look into in that area. They’re all 1 high school towns so has that community vibe you’re looking for. If you want to widen search a bit Cheshire, Newtown, Wallingford and of course my hometown Southington also have that similar community feel.

The energy regulators are constantly at war with the utilities so it has created some very volatile rate changes. We have the highest rate of urban forestation in the country so trees are everywhere so keep in mind you may need to do some tree work if you buy a home.

Once you get away from the shoreline there’s plenty of affordable private clubs to join in that area. There’s also some semi-private and men’s club options as well.

I don’t know your budget but if you can afford it, Fairfield is an awesome town with a bunch to do and on the water. Trumbull > Shelton though.
