How do Orange and Milford compare to Trumbull? We’d like to be closer to the water if possible. Seems like schools may not be at the same level?
Fairfield seems ideal and would theoretically be attainable, but probably less realistic.

There’s nothing in Orange but you are close to New Haven and schools are good (at least high school (Amity)) which is in a regional district shared with Bethany and Woodbridge. Milford has more going on, restaurants, breweries, beaches etc. I think the schools are fine? But not really sure. I’m from Cheshire which is a nice town and great schools but not as close to the water. Trumbull also has really good schools.
As part of his pregame pump up speech my Freshman football coach told us that he’d rather never bathe than live in Southington.
Look into Southbury. Middlebury. Cheshire.
Great towns maybe a longer commute.
I grew up in southbury and it was the greatest childhood anyone could ask for
Also we have a local club it’s $6500 a year.
You have to hit a sweeping draw though
Some call it a smother hook
This also accurately describes my good friends who live in Newtown and they love it/wont be leaving ever. Be sure to swing by Reverie Brewing company
Newtown/southbury/oxford/woodbury area is prime location for starter families
I can also recommend a realtor for the area if needed.
I can’t speak to the areas closer to New Haven but Fairfield and Westport are both really nice and close to Trumbull. Though with this area, the closer you are to NYC, the more expensive stuff generally will be.
Also, new Nest/Refuge member here checking in. Looking forward to connecting with folks for some golf next season.
Hi guys,
A few general questions to help me plan my movements during a visit in May.
What sort of cost would I be looking at to get a taxi/uber from Midtown Manhattan to Garden City GC and then from Garden City to JFK? Am I better off just hiring a car for the day?
If I have to get from NJ to Long Island, I’m seeing that Newark to Riverhead area on Long Island can be anywhere from about 1h30 to 3hr depending on time of day. How late at night or early in the morning would I need to be making the trip for it to be more like 1h30?
I would budget $200 to $250 to Taxi or Uber from Midtown to Garden City GC. It will likely be less than $200, but to set expectations, I think $200 to $250 is a good number to keep in mind. It depends on surge pricing. I think you can just check on the app for the cost. I recommend downloading Lyft as an alternative to Uber. I use Lyft 9.5/10 here in the city.
I’ve never hired a driver for a day, so I don’t know the cost. If you mean renting a car, it may be cheaper, but the time and hassle to pick and drop off the car I don’t think is worth it. You’re better off just calling a car.
Midnight to 6 am is when Newark to Riverhead will be 1.5 hours. I’d budget 2.5 to 3 hours for that trip
Thank you.
Yes — I was referring to a rental car.
Thanks for the tip re Lyft!
Sorry, just to clarify, I would budget $200 to $250 total to Taxi or Uber from Midtown to Garden City GC and GCGC to JFK. So that’s two trips, and like I said, it’ll likely be less than $200.
$250 for one trip is ridiculous, even for NYC
Thanks. Thinking it was just for the initial trip, I was shook!
In addition to @NYC 's information, it sounds like a (former local) guide may be needed and I’d be happy to accompany you on your journey.
I’m joining this discussion late, but why not take the LIRR from Penn to Garden City Station? Or do you have too much luggage?
Definitely an option!
First time, long time. I just moved from Brooklyn to Madison, NJ and am scoping out the local courses.
Is anyone a member at Madison Golf Club? Lifetime strapped, local muni golfer, but given less and less time available for golf, Madison Golf Club looks like it could be a good fit.
Any other advice about the local golf scene and clubs would be much appreciated.
Welcome to NJ! There are a ton of private courses around that area, unfortunately they don’t fit into my strapped budget. Seems like the majority just do the county cards and hope for the best! Depending on your age you can find some good junior memberships!
