Roll Call - Melbourne golfers!

Well that’s Chris, but yes, his Brother Brad should be preparing… for something.

Sorry, I should have used winking sarcasm font.

I’m sure they swap every now and then just for laughs.

eg Hawthorn beat Geelong this year. Pretty sure Chris couldn’t have been involved in that…

Whoa, gentle on the Hawks drive by’s!

Don’t worry.

I’m a hawks guy and attended the 08 GF followed by 10 of the 11 games before the '13 prelim final.

Ok, so having just spent a couple of days playing the West Course and Sandy Links, as well as a recent trip down to the Bellarine, this Sydneysider would like to go on record as being absolutely, insanely jealous of the quality of golf you guys have access to!!

Quite the run we had from '08 to the straight sets in 2016 eh. Apart from the Cats, we had a lot of teams measure. The Port prelim in '14 was the most stressful game I have ever been to!

Oooh, where did you play down the Bellarine?

Lonsdale, Barwon Heads, 13th Beach and Curlewis.

So much good golf so close together

I’m in Melbourne at the moment enjoying the British weather. I’m a bit unsure what to do on Sunday - Dandenong Ranges or Yarra Bend. Will Yarra Bend be a mud bath? I feel like the Ranges will be, and I just have standard trainers/sneakers.

I’m 3/7 courses into my trip so don’t neeeed more golf but then that’s why we’re all NLU fans and golf pervs.

PS I’m playing Sandringham at 1524 tomorrow if anyone wants to book as well

Likely both are a bit wet. I know Latrobe and Kew are underwater and they aren’t too far from YB (albeit YB might be on slightly higher land). Would not be surprised if Sandy Links was slushy too, post back with an update as I’m keen to get back there once this rain spell ends.

YB would be wet AF, the holes down the bottom of the hill right on the river might have a chance of being even wetter, but prob not under water. Weather on Sunday is supposed to be tip top, prob a good chance to get up to the Dandenongs.

ill second the trip to the Dandenongs, Olinda and Sassafrass nice places - Yarra Valley isnt that much further.

Played Lonsdale Links again on Sat arvo (through a few showers) the course really is pretty good, with some holes that id rate highly (16 and 17 especially) only downside was that the greens had recently been corred

Thanks all, I’ll have a walk around the forest then instead of playing mud ball at Yarra Bend.

Played Yarra Yarra this morning, what a course and how fast are those greens?! That’s been my favourite of Metro, Vic and Woodlands so far. Woodlands are growing up the grass on the banks around their greens, what a waste.

Might be free Sunday afternoon if you are keen to have a hit! Should be back from my trip by then.

Playing YY later in the month and am extremely keen.

They’re opening up the course to the public on 28/11 for those interested.

Give Sandy a couple more weeks. It’s mostly firm and has that lovely links-like thud, but I lost a ball on 2 as the long bunker down the is currently a pond. The couple holes by the lake at the back are a bit muddy too.

Mighteagle I’ll give Sunday a miss now, cheers though. All the week’s golf has caught up with me.

That’s a worry as I’m playing Sandy for the first time Sunday, I’m a Green Acres member so a wet bunker and a bit muddy is probably the least of my issues

Thanks for the report. Yeah those bunkers on the left of #2 aren’t great to be in at the best (driest) of times. Whenever the pin is right of centre I steer well clear and aim for the gap at the front. The right of #13 and left on #15 that border the water storage are often a bit soggy.

Yarra Yarra is really good. Taking the trees out that bordered the holes made such a difference both in terms of vistas, playing corridors (I go to pieces when I feel hemmed in by trees) as well as simply allowing sun for the grass to grow. One thing you notice when it’s windy is how many holes run north south (15 out of 18 from recollection) but that’s not uncommon on the relatively narrow parcels of land that YY, Huntingdale, Commonwealth and even Kingston Heath are on. Par 3s at YY are really good - variety in shots, distances, direction and elevation.

Hope you enjoyed the day at Sandy anyway and enjoy the rest of your trip.

Looking for some advice regarding using public transit vs renting a car for a week in Melbourne. We are staying in the CBD and I have two rounds of golf booked, other than that we don’t have any firm plans on the schedule. Wife would really like to go to Phillip Island for the penguin parade and it looks like this is only possible with a rental. I’m also wondering if it might be nice to have a car for the golf days. Anyone able to offer some thoughts on whether or not a car is needed?
