Roll Call - Melbourne golfers!

Sandringham Golf Course. Got it.
Thought it was an invitation to a cookout.

Any other sleepers?

Reckon your itinerary is top notch.

My itinerary is too golf heavy but easier to book and pare back.

Is Huntingdale a bit unloved/lower ranked because of its trees and greens? It’s bunkering looks quality, although not as cool as the renovation plans.

Inspired me to do my own little trip around the Aus Open. Have RM booked. Will see what else I can fit in where possible.

Huntingdale is one i’ve not played, but used to go there for the Masters - has this been changed much? I don’t remember 16 and 18 sharing a green for instance

Lots of fairways being linked together by the looks of it. New range at the bottom left (NW corner), furthest right looks a new par 4, they’re presumably digging up their poa greens…

New course plans from OCM look amazing!

Lots of classic OCM features; short grass everywhere, a LOT less trees, open vistas, pure distinction greens, short par 4s and great par 3s. All of which should greatly improve the course and make it infinitely more fun to play when completed in a few years.

Existing 16th hole along the road becomes the driving range and the travesty that is the par 3 15th gets blown up and replaced. Lots of good stuff to look forward to.

Wasnt planning to play Huntingdale.

Wait until the Renovation is done

Commonwealth being renovated too I think?

Commonwealth doesn’t really need a full reno IMO, just a mass removal of trees.

Curlewis felt like 2 different courses between the 2 nines. Front 9 is really flat and straight in front of you… back 9 different story entirely. Tons of land movement, much more engaging

Had a long discussion about sandbelt courses yesterday during our round, after we looked at the plan for huntingdale one mate comment was ‘so it’s trying to look like all the other sandbelt courses then’. I argued that it must have something unique or they wouldn’t be doing it - but after thinking about it, is he right?

I’ve never rated Huntingdale Ross. In my opinion, it had an over-inflated reputation due to being the venue for the Aussie Masters for a few decades. Now that it’s not on tv every year, it has been dropping steadily in the ratings as its star fades and people see it for what it is. Anything OCM do there will be an improvement.

Commonwealth, on the other hand, has some of the best green complexes in the country which reward shots coming in from the right line. Unfortunately the trees are impinging upon the fairways, limiting shot options into the greens and angles off the tee. It would be a world-class second shot/approach course if they’d just let Mike Clayton in there with a chainsaw.

Sandbelt courses have a distinctive look, heathland courses have a distinctive look, links courses have a distinctive look, it’s fine.

What are the most linksy courses near or in Melbourne?

St. Andrews Beach and the Dunes though the sand belt courses are all only a couple of ks from the beach and play v linksy.

Ok got those ones booked and staying at The Dunes

Isnt the answer that there arent any linksy courses near or in Melb? Courses are set within dunes, not links land.
