Roll Call: Massachusetts

We were coming from Mashpee which was bit of a drive, Lighthouse is under construction which was a little disappointing. I guess I was hoping for a little more of a links feel, small elevated greens took out the bump and run shots on most holes. Beautiful scenery, I think it would have been a little more fun if it was a little warmer and the winds were a little less severe.

Go in June or September (July and August can be too crowded) and I think you’ll have a different perspective. Also, you need to walk that course, driving in a cart doesn’t do it justice. The lighthouse being entirely covered stinks, but still such a unique course

I agree, nothing I have ever seen before, I could have used skiis to get down the hill on 2 with that tail wind it was like a double diamond at Killington. Lol

Played Highland Links today. Very similar feelings. No one ever showed up to open the pro shop, so I just walked nine and left. Really bizarre.

Wind and rain made it fairly difficult without any prior knowledge of the course. I’d love to play it firm and fast instead of marsh and mellow, but still with the wind.

Fun to be out there, but I don’t think I’ll make a trip to be there again unless I am already way out on the Cape.

A bunch of Massachusetts courses in here as usual. Most of which are unplayable for commoners like me.

I liked Old Sandwich better than TCC and I don’t care who knows it!

Speaking of TCC, my go-to golf hot take is that TCC is higher on my course bucket list than ANGC.

I’ve heard several people say the same. I’ll find my way onto Old Sandwich one of these days.

Scorching but I respect it. Lived in Brookline for 5 years and it was eating at me that I hadn’t played it. Finally weasled my way off there a couple years ago haha.

It’s totally colored by growing up around here and the mystique of The Country Club

Much has been made of the first hole at Sheep Ranch, but for me the most breathtaking reveal in golf is catching a glimpse of the TCC grounds through a barbed wire fence while searching for your ball in the left bushes on the 6th at Putterham.

Same for me but I think its because TCC actually seems attainable for me while Augusta most likely will never happen. Also OS and BGC are very high up my list.

What’s going on everyone! I am moving to the Rochester area for work for the next 4 months and am looking forward to checking out the courses in the area. Any and all suggestions welcome!

Never knew there was a Rochester in Mass until I read your post. Learn something every day

Same as @missingreens said, everything south of 495 is basically RI to me. That being said, you’re not too far from Plymouth and the Cape. Plenty of solid golf to be found.

Well, that sounds promising, haha. It looks like there’s only 1 course there. Looks like there’s a few out on cape code though.

In all seriousness, some thoughts…

Marion GC is a unique and awesome 9 holer that is a must play if you don’t mind some variable conditions

Any of the Plymouth Public’s are enjoyable, although expensive. The Pine Hills courses are private level experience in terms of conditions and accoutrements, but with costs to match. Plus, you really can’t walk those courses. I find Waverly and Crosswinds courses more interesting (although also tougher walks)

However, the Cape is where you want to look IMHO. Almost All towns on the cape have at least one muni if not two. This actually drives competition in terms of both cost and conditions. Then there are some privately owned daily fee courses that are very good, with Cape Cod Country Club being the most interesting of that bunch. Owners are trying to close it down, but not for another year or two so you should be good.

Challenge with the Cape is tee time availability come July and August. Was a blood bath last year with COVID. Hoping it’s a bit better this year

Thanks a lot for that! Hit me up if you’re ever in the area :+1:t2:

There’s gotta be some decent golf courses in the New Bedford area. Acushnet?

Agree with all of @missingreens Plymouth thoughts. Atlantic is also nice, and more walkable than Crosswinds or Waverly. Souther’s Marsh is a fun one too, and very affordable and quick to play usually.
