Roll Call: Massachusetts

The Captains on the cape is usually open unless there is snow on the ground. Montaup in RI is the same.

Montaup is a fun track.

Captains was in pretty good shape today considering the rain last night and quite busy. They are only playing the Starboard course at the moment. The greens had been punched and top dressed a few weeks ago but still rolled pretty well. It was definitely worth the trip.

Hi guise! I’m planning a one-man, 7-10 day trip through New England this coming August. I took a ten day trip through the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic last year and enjoyed it immensely.

Base plan is to fly into Boston, rent a truck, go to the UPS store and pick up my gear, and then drive around MA-ME-NH-VT-CT-RI and camp some, hotel some, hike some, fish a lot, and play some golf. I don’t want to derail the thread, but if you have any recommendations for ANYTHING in New England I would be most grateful. DMs are open. Cheers.

Do you have any high priority courses already? Round budgets? How much golf vs the other stuff?

I’m just one guy, and I don’t really have a budget. I camp mostly but just because I like it. I thought I’d play 3-4 times in the 10 days. it’s not really a golf trip per se but I am a golf sicko, of course. Looking for good hikes and fishing as well. I’m not really a tourist, just a traveler. Greasy cheeseburgers, lobster rolls, and cold beers.

Get to Cape Cod and play Highland Links and Bass River.

Sounds like Maine should be your primary destination then.

Highland links has a camp ground basically next door.

If you are not locked into August, would recommend pushing your trip back to September. August is the busiest vacation time of the year for people that live in New England because all of the kids are out of school until Labor Day and the weather is warm at that time. However, if you come after Labor Day the prices will drop from their summer levels and you’ll still get pretty good weather. In some places the rates will go back up in October with the fall foliage people driving demand.

THAT is the kind of stuff I need to know! September is fine by me!

Do they have memberships?

When you get closer, DM one of us and we can pop you into the Whatsapp chat too, we can help coordinate games if you’re looking for people to play with.

I’d agree with the September recommendation too, still warm out but not as stiflingly humid as August. I’d always recommend October in New England because it’s basically heaven earth, but understand if you wouldn’t want to wait that long.

New England fall golf is my personal happy place.

In Rhode Island - have to play Newport National, Meadowbrook, and Cranston. Get some food at Matunuk Oyster Bar for sure when down in South County. Just over the boarder in CT, you can hit Lake of Isles and Shennecossett (low-key best 19th hole in the wall pub) and Lake of Isles at Foxwoods.

Strong second for Highland Links - very unique. In that vein and depending how much you are going to travel Hooper Golf Course in Walpole, NH is great - another top notch 9-holer.

Hit The Knack in Orleans for a lobster roll and a brew on your way out from Highland. Whetstone Station is about 20 minutes from Hooper and has great beer and pub food with an unbeatable view (especially if there is any foliage when you go). Those are two great unbeatable days in my book.

Have plenty of recommendations for specific cities/towns if you need them shoot me a message… In no particular order a few that punch well above their weight in terms of either food/drink: Portland, ME, Portsmouth, NH/Kittery, ME, Burlington, VT, Providence, RI

If more looking for hikes/outdoors: Obviously White Mountains, Littleton, NH is an underrated jumping off point for that, for Berkshires North Adams, MA is a cool starting point (may be able to get out on Taconic) and has a great art museum if you catch a rainy day. Northern Maine has a ton of great stuff as well, but once up there you are kind of committed to doing mostly that for the trip.

this sounds dope

September is indeed glorious up here. One thing to keep in mind, though: aeration. New England courses aerate throughout September. You will want to call courses ahead of time to make sure the greens aren’t punched.

Yeah Highland Links is a cool spot. I’ve played there many times and had a blast every time. Not the best maintained golf course because they’re maintained by a larger golf course management company, but pretty cool that use very small amount of water (I think they just do centerline fairway irrigation). Can’t beat the views overlooking the National seashore though on most holes, and the outer cape region in itself is one of the most unique and beautiful places. Not much do to in Truro (where the course is) but head down 10 more min and visit Provincetown. Unbelievable restaurants, bars, and culture.

Happy to have you out (or anyone else) at The Orchards in South Hadley if you end up in the western part of Mass. Classic 1922 Donald Ross, hosted 2004 US Womens Open. Bunch of breweries and Mt Holyoke/Mt Tom nearby
