What an unbelievably fun day on an amazing course. Thanks for being an awesome host @Cinnamon! Realg hope to be back soon. Taconic is the real deal, just a pure golf experience.
Has anyone played or know someone who has played Bellevue Golf Club in Melrose? I live so close to there and I am longing to get on course on a regular basis. The munis around me are booked solid and Bellevue as a drive by seems delightfully deserted.
Next level if someone know the costs as well it would be sweet.
I’ve never met any members from Bellevue, but Bear Hill is another nearby private 9 hole club that charges $4600 a year for a full individual, and an initiation of $6750.
Best public driving range around Boston? Preferably grass?
No such place.
Stone Meadow is the only place with grass tees that I’m aware of (also Southborough…but that’s pretty far from Boston) and the grass is only open during the week.
Yeah I went to Southborough on Monday and the grass was open. It’s legit right off the Pike so it’s easy to get to with no traffic.
Kohr is probably the best range. I think that they have grass tees there, but that you have to have a membership to use them.
I used to go there constantly. I liked fine enough, but it’s pricy for what you get, they leave the grass really long, and the whole range slopes pretty good back to front. You pretty much always have a downhill lie.
This is even further from Boston, but there used to be a range in Northborough, right on the intersection of rt 20 and rt 9. They were awesome. Closed almost a decade ago though.
I want to like Kohr because it is super convenient to me, but I just can’t get over the fact that you’re hitting so downhill.
My buddy had to bail so I have an open spot tomorrow at 748 at Franklin Park if anyone wants to join. I know it might be tough being short notice on a week day, but if anyone is interested, let me know
I played Highland Links in Truro yesterday for the first time. I was out on the Cape with a few friends - my original plan was to find an AirBnB, stay over, and play the course this morning, but they were all leaving around 3, so I made a 5:30PM tee time and just drove home after. Had the course almost completely to myself, perfect weather, just short of sunset. Definitely made the right decision.
What an absolute gem of a golf course. I could play there every single day and not get tired of it. It has some tricky holes, but it was extremely playable - even if you hit a ball into the tall rough between fairways, you have a pretty good chance of finding it and getting a club on it.
I’m moving up to Boston (Arlington) from Raleigh in the next few months. Which courses should be on my short list? Would love to get out with some Refugees!
If you want close to you and cheap, then Fresh Pond in Cambridge is the best bet for you. It is a cool little par 9 with a good variety of holes.
If you want to drive a little bit then in Boston these is George Wright and Franklin park. It can be hard to get a tee time, but if you stay flexible then you can snag a afternoon weekend tee time on either. I think George Wright is the best “muni” in Mass.
Also, if you like different try Red Tail in Devens. It is a great course with a very different back 9 versus the New England Donald Ross style courses. Large waste areas and raised tee boxes for example.
Have a good move.
I’ll definitely be checking out Fresh Pond, and Red Tail looks like an awesome track. Thanks for all of the info!
Talking just courses that are within ~30min from Arlington.
Great ($100+): Red Tail > Butter Brook > Shaker Hills
Good (~$60): George Wright > Sandy Burr > Franklin Park > Wayland > Putterham
Decent 9-holers (~$30): Fresh Pond > Sassamon Trace > Maynard > Pine Meadows
I’d probably avoid anything else.
Sassamon Trace too for a good 9 holer, in Natick, about 30ish from Arlington
Well I was coming here to do a shamelessly promotional post, but this creates the perfect entry point! Highland is so goddamn fun, and a late afternoon round there is a joy.
AND OH BY THE WAY
If you’d like to enjoy that, along with a morning 18 at Hyannis GC and a nice little patio lunch there, shoot me an email and grab one of the few remaining spots for our Cape Cod Doubleheader on Saturday 7/11!
We also have an event Saturday 7/18 at Presidents in Quincy, and a HUGE and amazing day planned at Hooper up in New Hampshire for 8/1. bostongolfandsocial@gmail.com or DM me here for more info!
I’d throw Quail Ridge on the “Decent 9 holer” list.
With the lack of traffic these days, you can expand further south and west too. Brookmeadow, Granite Links, and Butternut, all spring to mind as options into the various categories.
If you expand to 45 mins the options get even more plentiful.
And in terms of this discussion so I don’t just look like a troll… I will ALWAYS ride for South Shore in Hingham. May be a squidge more than 45 min from Arlington, and the front and back 9s are suspiciously similar for stretches, but the land movement is monstrous, and 16 (short punchbowl-ish 4) - 17 (short uphill diabolical par 3) - 18 (reachable amphitheater par 5) is so goddamn fun.
