Going to be playing Farm Neck Golf Club in a couple weeks in Martha’s Vineyard. Does anyone know how the best ferry to take and also how to get to the course once we’ve gotten to the island?
I am assuming you’ll be coming from Off Cape?
The woke way to do it is to take the Island Queen ferry from Falmouth to Oak Bluffs and then walk the ~2 miles to the course. Carry half a set and it’s perfect.
In all seriousness, Oak Bluffs is the closest spot to Farm Neck that has a ferry. The smaller ferries out of Falmouth are usually really manageable as the parking is right at the dock and are quicker, but if you’d rather go larger, I believe that the Steamship Authority has a ferry out of Woods Hole and HyLine has a ferry out of Hyannis (if you’re coming from the Outer Cape - this would be a better option). Once you’re in Oak Bluffs, I imagine you’ll be able to Uber - but don’t know for sure.
(Note - when I travel to MV, I usually go to Edgartown on the Pied Piper out of Falmouth, so my advice is only based on what I have heard / read and not from personal experience)
Spot on recommendation. Also, leave plenty of time to walk around Oaks Bluff @ejdean7, if dock there. I will recommend the lobster roll at the Offshore Ale Company, they are open limited hours right now. Beer is meh but is the roll is worth the $20.
Larry Gannon in Lynn is a must-play
Beverly Golf and Tennis in Beverly is a fun course too.
Give a shout once you’re settled and we’ll get out for a quick 9 at Fresh Pond. Good luck with the move.
Hello all. I’ve officially landed in the refuge!! I’ve been an active reader for over a year now but never took the time to make an account until recently. I figured that my first post should be here in appreciation of my home state and all of its resident golfers from Williamstown to Provincetown and everywhere in between.
Cape Cod is my home and I urge any of you that come here (or live here too) to contact me and we’ll get out for round together. I’m a member at a private course but also enjoy playing the munis from Barnstable to Brewster. 9 holes at Chequessett and 9 holes at Highland Links might be the most fun day of golf possible on Cape.
Looking forward to teeing it up with fellow refugees soon!
Cheers
I’ll be down next month. Will definitely hit you up. On the south Dennis/Brewster line
I will also be here for most weekends. If you boys ever want to get out for a round let me know!
Hello Everyone! Long Time, First Time here. I’ve been getting out to play more recently and looking to find a few more folks to tee it up with on occasion. I live in the city and typically willing to drive about an hour or so either direction to play. Let me know if anyone is interested and well get out!
Also, was anyone enjoying how fast courses were playing in June? With the slight drought a few courses I played were much faster than normal.
Quail Ridge has some weird stuff with the two greens on 7/16, but I agree - some decent holes, conditions are usually pretty good. Good place to get a quick 9 in (though there aren’t really any places to get a “quick” round in these days).
Hey, a NH guy here with a question for MA folks - any recommendations for courses around the Lowell area? 3 high school buddies and I are playing next Friday and Lowell is the triangulation point.
We are bogey golfers (or slightly worse) and don’t need to go cheap but not sure we want to shell out +$100.
Any suggestions appreciated!
When I am up there I play at Merrimack Valley. Great Ross design, short with lots of water. Get a cart.
Butter Brook in Westford is my go-to in that area.
I’d second what @SergioTracker said. Butterbrook a good course in that area.
Butter Brook is one of my favorite tracks in this area, but that’s pushing your price range.
For other places in the area that are a bit cheaper- Trull Brook is decent but can be a really slow round depending on the day and it’s a tough walk. Could always do Green Meadow in Hudson - not too far from Lowell. Or Four Oaks in Dracut.
Butterbrook usually is pushing $90+.
Trull Brook has some of the toughest greens in the area. So fast and severe.
Haven’t played the other two mentioned. Typically just play in the city if I can’t get on butterbrook.
Played Pinehills Nicklaus yesterday. First twilight round @1:36. Course is in great shape for $85 twilight price, but I wouldn’t pay the $135 standard rate. Used to be reasonable a few years ago, but I’m not sure how they justify the increases every year…
I played Shaker Hills this morning, at the $100 max rate, and I have mixed reviews. The green and fairways were in great shape. If you are a straight shooter you will kill there because all the par 4s are on the shorter side.
On the other hand if you are like me, big hitting sprayer of the ball, it will be a tough day. The rough is dead, burnt out, gone. So anything off the fairway will roll into the trees or give you a bare lie. Speaking of trees, there is a f ton, like way too many. My high “fade” would disappear into them and I it was a crap shoot if I was going to find it. This lead to 9 penalties today for me.
Would I go back? Probably not, it is overpriced for the layout, you are paying for the irrigation system, and it doesn’t suit my game.
After reading the above I will try Butter Brook next time or pay the extra $20 for Red Tail, which I know is stellar.
Butterbrook is always in great shape, though the greens seem to have a ton of pitch marks that aren’t repaired.
They have done a ton of tree thinning in the past year on the front nine which has really helped. I’d rather give them my $90 than most other places.
Shining rock is another fun course west of the city.
