Roll Call: Massachusetts

I have an extra spot on Saturday at 7:40 in West Bridgewater if anyone would like to join.

WBCC? Wish I could. Learned how to play on that course. Can remember every hole lol

Kind of a weird ask. My parents (from Korea, in their late 50s) are visiting my sister in Boston and are looking to play a few rounds of golf within about an hour or so of Cambridge, MA. They do not care about architecture, design, etc. They are looking for somewhere in great shape (lush, pure greens, etc rather than firm & fast). Cost is not really a factor. Must have carts. Where should they go?

Hello all
Is anyone involved in playing on the mass golf member days this year … I got picked in the lottery and was curious if anyone else did … I’ll be playing New Bedford cc

I got Oak Hill in Fitchburg this year. I played NBCC a few years back in a members day and it was fantastic. Big regret of mine was not playing HS golf, that was our track.

Anyone played Indian Ridge in Andover? Going there Wednesday. Looks pure.

I’ve been a member for 12 years, love the layout, hate the greenskeeper. He’s been coasting the last few years. Only bothers to do his job when we host an MGA event or one of our ā€œmajorsā€.

I won’t be offended if you said our greens are crap because they are.

Caddied at Indian Ridge for a few summers in the late 90s/early 2000s. Don’t know if it has gone through any major changes in the last 15 or so years but the layout is nice.

The first hole was completely rebuilt 5ish years ago. The pond was expanded and pushed forward a bit and the entire fairway reshaped. Other than removal of a lot of trees (200+) and the range rebuilt, we haven’t had too many large capital improvements in my tenure.

In all seriousness I do really enjoy it, it’s a great club and membership. The course could be so much better if the head greenskeeper would act like a greenskeeper and not a weekly lawn care service.

Any general tips or trouble spots to watch out for that aren’t super obvious? Playing w my father in law and 2 of his college roomies. All decent sticks, but likely won’t tip it out (they’re in their mid 60s)

Hmm off the top of my head:

  • 2nd: I’ve always found plays a half to a full club longer (doesn’t look it)
  • 3rd: You cannot be above the hole on the green
  • 9th: Depending how far you hit it the 2nd pond could be in play (260ish depending where the markers are), watch your line off the tee
  • 14: Blind tee shot, right side is better off the tee, everything funnels left. I aim top of hill right rough with a small draw
  • 18: You really cannot be above the hole on this green.

Love to know your thoughts and how you played, good luck! I have soccer practice for my oldest otherwise I’d show up with one of my NLU towels and introduce myself.

Thanks man! Looking forward to it. Anytime you need a decent player but a good hang to round out a group I’m just up the road in Portsmouth, have sticks will travel!

Appreciate the tips, can’t wait to ignore them and kick myself.

How’d the round go?

I reallly struggled with the driver all day. Shot 84, my short game was pretty dialed.

Agree with most of your opinions on the course. I thought the greens were nice and rolled true. Well manicured across the property. Back 9 was a little repetitive. I just had the double miss going with the driver and put myself in too many penal areas with no look at the green on the back.

Don’t think I would have shot my normal scoring avg on many courses that day. Overall I enjoyed it though! Not my favorite style of golf course, but it’s done well IMO in that style.

With how narrow some of the holes are, the dreaded double miss can make for a tough day off the tee. Glad you liked it though!

My seasons about done I think (shoulder problems), but if you want to next season I’m up for putting together a Refuge foursome one day there.

I’m definitely down. I’d love to have my normal shot shape with the driver working on that course.

I did par the 3 hardest holes, so that’s always a plus.
