Roll Call: Massachusetts

Interesting comment to the IG post:

As a local architect, I would have liked that project.

Mungeam has done a lot of work at George Wright and is leading the Putterham renovation, among other things.

I’m from a couple towns up the Thames River from Shenny. Can backup what the others here have said recommending it. It’s a fun course and you won’t be disappointed.

Question for all - Firm is doing a charity holiday auction, and one of the items is 18 and lunch at Boston Golf Club for a group of 3. What would be your individual limit for this / what do y’all value it at? For context, I was approached by a couple coworkers about going in on it together, with their personal upper limits being between $300 and $400 per person.

This is the correct limit. For reference the unaccompanied rate there is $350 per golfer.

Do keep in mind, I am sure this does not include the caddie gratuity which will be another $100 per bag.

Yeah somewhere between 300 and 400 seems reasonable - honestly it’s such a fun place to get your dick repeatedly kicked in by the greens.

I played there for the first time in September. I don’t think I’ve seen so many approach shots hit the green and end up god knows where. Or 12 foot putts that I had to hit 2 feet and broke 6 feet. The member I was playing with said something along the lines of “you are getting the full Boston Golf Club experience today”.

News item today regarding the Mass SJC vacating the award of $5 million against Indian Pond CC in a lawsuit brought by a couple whose house was being bombarded by wayward drives. Based on his description of the location of the house it sounds like Justice Kafker knows his way around a golf course (and I note someone with a similar name carries a respectable handicap at a course on Cape Cod):

“If, at the tee, a golfer tried to cut the corner and hit directly toward the hole, an errant shot (241 yards from the championship tee, 217 yards from the member’s tee, and 192 yards from the middle tee) could hit the house,’’ he wrote. “There is a bunker (that is, a sand trap) located to the left of the landing area to discourage golfers from cutting the corner.”

“Errant golf balls are to golf what foul balls and errors are to baseball. They are a natural part of the game. They demonstrate the difficulty and challenge of the sport even for the very best players,” Kafker wrote. “Despite practice, instruction, technological improvements, and even good golf course design and operation - disputed in the instant case - golf shots go awry, as a matter of course.”

It seems like they’re sending it back to trial again because they thought the judge left out some critical records. Hopefully, they just settle and everyone walks away.

I have not read the decision, just the Globe article, but it sounds like the SJC found fault with the jury instructions on what is reasonable to expect for a house next to a golf course. If Justice Kafker is the same one listed on the GHIN app, I can say that he likely has some experience with wayward tee shots finding the vacation condos that line his home course - I know that I do.

Hole and house in question:

It does seem to be slightly down hill

IPCC stinks. That’s all.

Buyer beware. You have to know that shit if you buy a house on “country club way” on the right side of a fairway! I hate this guy.

Going to Boston for nye with my wife. We are staying at Boston Harbor Hotel.

Got recommendations for restaurants that are slightly upscale but not over the top fru-fru?

I made a resy at Yvonnes, but it looks a little too C-suite with a side of 5 diamond girl for me. I don’t want to wear a jacket lol.

Any great “new American” style places with a great bar program? Somewhere to find a Heady Topper/Sip of Sunshine but also possibly a single malt?

Appreciate it!

What type of food are you looking for? I can give some suggestions based on that but since you’ll be near the harbor look at The Chart House, north end restaurants such as Ricardo’s, Limoncello, la famiglia Giorgio’s, for the seaport look at Empire, Davios, scorpion bar/Lolita for a more casual mexican food/bar type place

The Chart House looks great. Went ahead and made a reservation there to be safe.

Seafood is always good.

A good tavern with good food is always the go-to for me. White Horse Tavern in Newport, RI is one of my favorite restaurants. It’s the oldest tavern in the US, but it’s not touristy BS at all. The food is great.

On that note, Warren Tavern sounds interesting, but it also sounds overpriced for the food and touristy.

Warren Tavern is very townie but good.

Both Little Donkey and Saltie Girl are fantastic small plate type places with a great vibe and a great cocktail program.

I’d also check out Trillium and OFFSUIT as places to pop in for a drink.
