Roll Call: Massachusetts

I looked at some Google reviews of red tail and they are uh not kind recently. It’s been many years since I’ve played there but at that point it might’ve been my favorite public course in MA. Looks like they’ve been doing a lot of work to the course that may impact the experience. Curious if you’ll end up feeling the same way

Yeah granite links is tough bc it’s really the nicest option close to Boston in terms of facilities. Super popular. I’ve played the course once a while ago and there are positives for sure: it was in good shape and there are some places with great views of Boston. I think there are better values/courses but you’d have to drive further/not be going to a wedding there

I played Granite Links last year and while it is many things (in great condition, has great views, is really expensive) it just wasn’t a very fun course to play. I felt like it’s a place you need course knowledge in order to get around and that’s kind of a shitty thing for a $150 course to demand of you.

Also, anyone looking into Red Tail should divert to Butter Brook. I’ve also heard good things about Shaker Hills nearby.

Got out to Butter Brook yesterday. They’ve made some welcome changes (e.g., paved the path to ten tee), but it was a 5 hour round. One of my favorites in the area - will be back soon for sure.

Would agree with this absolutely. I didn’t particularly like the layout when I played it many years ago. Felt like you were playing down the side of a mountain in spots and was scenic golf rather than actually good holes for the most part.

I liked Shaker Hills when I played there a while ago. Solid layout.

Shaker has gotten to Red Tail levels as far as cost goes. Im hopeful that the new ownership at Red Tail maintains that place a bit better. I played Butternut last Saturday and though its not the easiest course and has a couple really dick punchy tee shots its still great. My buddy overslept so i was talking to the couple that kind of run that place and they were super nice to talk to which is something i hold in high regard at a course

Butternut offers great value for that neck of the woods. So long as you can keep it in those narrow fairways and avoid the trees.

I played a few weeks ago. Fairways still have not recovered with a lot of bare spots. It’s playable, but hard to justify the price.

From the few folks I’ve talked to, initial returns on the new ownership at Red Tail in terms of conditioning don’t look good. It’s still crazy to me that they focused so much on the range there for their first improvements - you’re never going to be able to hit more than reduced flight balls there, so why make that the first investment?

Anyone in/near the South Shore?

I’m in Brockton, technically the capitol of the South Shore.

In Hingham.

I bounce around the South Shore public courses. Most often South Shore CC, North Hill CC and Green Harbor GC.

Seems like everyone in here is on the South Shore/Cape

Yeah I’m from Marshfield, play Green Harbor a ton and North Hill too. Also play at Presidents in Quincy a lot since they have a twilight rate and I’m at UMass Boston

Weymouth here. Had played the Sunday quota game @ Green Harbor for a few summers but haven’t been getting out there a ton lately. For no specific reason. Silly things keep getting in the way.

Im in North Reading, just to make anyone living north of the city know they arent alone

Westford here. Another North/West outlier

For anyone who hasn’t joined Tee Party Roost, we’re opening up the sign-ups for our next event, The Notorious P. A. R. Open at Norton CC, to anyone and everyone. About 30 spots left, we have the tee starting at 11 AM. You do not need to be a Nest member to play, only if you want to try and move on to the regional event in Atlantic City in July. Cost is $85, including cart and a charity donation. Add your info to the sheet below. Come out, meet some fellow golf sickos and play a fun course.
