Anyone looking to get out this weekend and have space for a single?
Trying to #getinvolved. What are some good public courses south of Boston? I’m on the south shore and typically end up playing West Bridgewater CC (I still call it Riverbend) or Atlantic. Looking to mix in some new courses this year.
Get over to DW in Brockton. Much better round than West Bridgewater, and extremely affordable.
Thanks. I’ll be sure to check it out
Got 1 opening at Lochmere CC tomorrow morning at 10:20a if anyone is interested.
Where on South Shore?
Waverly Oaks Plymouth
Crosswinds Plymouth
South Shore CC Hingham
Pembroke CC Pembroke
Southers Marsh Carver
Are a few ones I enjoy
I’m in Rockland. The groups that I normally play with live between Quincy and Cohasset. Pembroke came up in conversation yesterday and I enjoyed it maybe 8 years ago was the last time I played there. Haven’t played the other ones, but I’ve heard good things. I’ll have to check them out
Waverly Oaks is the best public course in MA imo.
Waverly is really nice. The staff is another story, but the course is terrific.
Agree with Waverly and Crosswinds - terrific courses. South Shore is good. Not a fan of Pembroke - bunkers are terrible there and maintenance seems to vary year to year. Never played Southers Marsh.
I played Green Harbor for the first time a few weeks ago. Course is decent enough - wide open. And the new driving range they are putting in is going to be great.
Southers is my favorite course, honestly. It’s super fun and the people are just so nice. You can play it in 2.5 hours or even less if it’s not busy. Big fan of Crosswinds, too. Fun, but tough.
I had a 5-1/2-6 hour round at Green Harbor last year. I think it was the day of their members tournament and the pin locations were ridiculous. 3 groups waiting at par 3s at times. Other than that and from the times I had played before, I liked the course a lot. Good value.
Good God. That’s the kind of experience that generally keeps me from returning to places. Luckily I played it at 11:30 on a Thursday in March so we finished in 4 hours.
New refuge user here. From Ohio but currently live in Kentucky and moving to the North End in early May. I know next to nothing about the golf scene in Massachusetts. It seems from the outside looking in that it is mainly old(probably not relaxed?) country clubs. Any advice on courses I need to get to? Anyone have a weekend game that is looking for another player(4.6 handicap currently)? Any and all advice welcome.
While you are correct that most of the very top courses in the Boston area are private and exclusive (or at least expensive with long waiting lists), you will also find a vibrant and interesting public golf scene. As a starting point, the city of Boston has two great munis in George Wright and Franklin Park, both in the southern neighborhoods of the city proper, like 20-30 min from North End. Check out Andy Johnson’s George Wright content in particular, though many people I know think Franklin Park is more fun to play.
You are also about 20 minutes from Fresh Pond, a 9-holer in Cambridge that seems to have a very fun vibe around it. Sandy Burr in Wayland is a perennial favorite public course, about a 30 minute drive west from downtown.
There’s a good Crash Course: Boston Golf episode that Tron did that might be a good listen. My favorite public tracks are Beverly Golf and Tennis, Cape Cod Country Club, people love Red Tail (I’ve never played), Cape Ann (cool historic 9-holer on the water), Mt Hood is okay, Shining Rock, Stowe Acres, Robert T. Lynch (close to Boston if you can’t get on George Wright)
Piggy backing here
Red Tail is fine but new ownership this year and we will see how they maintain the course
Mt Hood is a fun track to play but id reccomend doing so before 8 am if youre going for a weekend (Im from Melrose originally, if you want to go the local route we used to sneak on after the ranger went home and play 5 holes)
Stow is fine as well but their staff makes me not ever want to go back there
Being from Ohio i feel like an hour drive is nothing for you so if you can head west, north or south an hour you can find some really nice public courses.
Played the south last weekend, not great.
Got out for 9 holes at Crosswinds today. It’s in really nice shape for this time of year.
