This may sound harsh, but there is not a human on earth I dislike more.

Thought of a couple more.

Easton Club - Actually played here growing up a good amount. Wasn’t the best course but had some good holes.
Clearview (Cambridge CC) - Again wasn’t great but was kinda of old school and had small greens. Always played well in high school there.
Harbourtowne did close but was redone and turned into Links at Perry Cabin and is technically Pete Dye’s last course.

Off the courses you listed I always really enjoyed Caroline just never got a chance to play it in it’s prime. Don’t think the grass has been cut once since it closed 4 years ago. Only played Bay Club-West and the only worst course down there I have played is Ocean Resorts. Godawful course

Another lurker sounding off… 15 handicap, bit of a nomad between UMD, Montgomery County, and Frederick courses. RIP Glenn Dale.

Cross-post from the VA Roll Call.

I’m headed to Old Hickory in Woodbridge, VA for a scramble this Sunday 2/2. We could use a 4th. Anyone want to join us? I played their November event and had a good time. See the link below for more details. Reply here or DM if interested in joining up.

Event details here.

Where are the best courses to walk in Maryland? Live in Timonium and work typical 9-5. The Baltimore county and city course make you take a cart on weekends. Most other courses I have played are not walking friendly (Waverly, Timbers, etc.) with long stretches between holes.

I have walked before at the Baltimore County courses on the weekends. Walked Timbers Sunday even though those long stretches suck. But curious to see what other courses people recommend

I’m not sure how long you’ve been in the area and what courses you’ve seen/played, but this is my 2 cents:

Some of the county and city courses will make you BUY a cart on the weekend mornings until 1pm or something. However, few, if any, courses force you to actually use the cart, and you can still walk.
Unfortunately it’s almost easier to list the courses that AREN’T good walks: Waverly, Woodlands, Greystone, Timbers, Fairway Hills (ugh), Challedon, Little Bennet, Hampshire, River Downs (ha), Musket Ridge, MD National, etc.

You may have to go a bit off the beaten path to play courses that don’t make you purchase a cart on the peak weekends, but the value, pace of play/availability of tee times, average maintenance, etc. make it more than worth the extra 30 minutes to an hour of total travel time. So in no particular order, my favorite courses to walk/play in the area are:

  • Quail Valley in Littlestown, PA (if you haven’t played here, do it. Everyone on the Refuge- go, you’ll thank me. The greens are the purest you’ll find consistently on nearly any public course in a 100 mile radius… for 1/4 of the price).

  • Mount Pleasant (A city course, I know, but I didn’t think they forced cart purchase on weekends.
It’s a decent test from the tips, and has a cool history. Clifton and Forest Park are also worth checking out too, just because of their value and history).

  • Diamond Ridge isn’t too bad of a walk and I honestly like the layout so. much. more than Woodlands (does anyone agree?). These days it seems like DR is always in basically the same shape as the Woodlands as well.

  • Clustered Spires in Frederick. Great walk, good layout, cheap, and there’s just an awesome group of people that work/hang out over there.

  • Worthington Manor near Frederick. It’s far but one of my favorite courses around. One of the few walkable “newer nicer 70/270 corridor courses” IMO

  • The Montgomery County courses may also force you to purchase a cart, but Rattlewood is worth checking out since it’s not too far and very walkable. Northwest is another good one (long course, flat, fun enough). The aforementioned Little Bennet is worth experiencing (do not walk it, though), but my favorite course in MoCo is Poolesville. Unfortunately, Poolesville is about 1 hr 45 min from basically any location in Maryland, so I don’t suggest making the trip just for the course.

  • Southern PA has a bunch of courses within a 1ish hour drive worth checking out. Links at Gettysburg is good and walkable. The Bridges, Iron Valley (Pete Dye), Penn National (36 holes). York has a few good ones too, though I’ve only played each course around there once or twice (Heritage Hills, Royal Manchester, etc.).

  • Other cheap/fun courses not too far from you (north of Bmore) that some may make fun of me for liking, but I think every golfer should check out at least once, ya know, just to see if it feels good, are: Westminster National (a tough walk), Oakmont Green, South Hills (27 holes), and Flatbush GC.

Also, I’ve mentioned this before on this thread, but I just joined Piney Branch up in Hampstead for an extremely reasonable price (probably less per year than most decent public courses much closer to Bmore/DC). It’s a great course and very walkable. Hunt Valley is also affordable, but probably not the best walk (super hilly). The lower end private clubs around are definitely worth checking out though, since they’re generally struggling to stay afloat these days.

Quail Valley is such a good value. Grandparents live in Littlestown and always try to get out there when I visit.

Does Fox Hollow make you take a cart on weekends? That’s super walkable and, IMO, a pretty fun track considering its price.
