Thanks for all the info. I haven’t really ventured out past Waverly/Turf Valley to the west. Have played Whiskey Creek in outings a few times.
New Topic…River Downs is awful but is there a way to make it good? Is it just conditioning, the segmented par 5 and the final hole is a joke or is there more to it being bad? When I lived in Reisterstown I would go to use the grass driving range but they rarely have it available.
Is that only during the summer? I was actually just looking at time and Fox Hollow, Rocky, and Diamond Ridge all had separate rates for this weekend in the morning
I’m not sure what could save River Downs at this point, short of a full renovation/redesign/rebranding/removal and replacement.
I grew up nearby, and started getting into the game right around when it opened (mid 90s). I used to dream of being able to afford playing there. I remember it was featured on that local show ‘Golfing the Mid Atlantic’ (I think that’s what it was called… shoutout Bobby Vermillion) and it was supposed to be the tits.
I think it was just designed to be too damn hard, too far in the boonies at the time, too expensive, etc. That was all even before the golf bubble burst, and then it slid out of control. It’s honestly in better shape now than it was for a good 5-10 years there in the dark ages.
I’m honestly surprised it’s still open. It must be something with environmental regs/easements and nothing else can be done with the land except for a golf course. It would be really cool to see it tweaked slightly (revise unfair green and fairway undulations, change some teeboxes and angles, and shined up all-around) but I don’t see that happening anytime soon.
Who remembers that course in its glory? Anyone remember the former 2nd now 11th hole that used to be a great/evil par 4 that was neutered into a dumpy blind par 3? Does anyone still play that hole as a par 4 like me?
It seems like most courses in the metro area are starting to charge mandatory cart fees on weekend mornings, just within the last couple of years.
Not sure if it’s a money thing or pace-of-play thing. I just know that those ‘fringe’ courses i listed typically don’t jam you up like that.
And I was able to confirm for sure that Worthington Manor always offers a walking rate that’s $14 less than the riding rate, anytime. It would be worth calling around to a few places near Bmore and see if they do something similar (or lobbying for it- I’ll sign that petition)
Posted this in Virginia’s thread as well, but if anyone is familiar with working in DC and living in the Maryland suburbs, please DM me. I might be moving your way and have a few quick questions.
I think we could definitely get a decent group between the Maryland and other DMV chapters. There’s event planned for April in Richmond that includes all of the DMV chapters so if you want to through out some dates we could get this thing going!
Yeah man I would love to get something special together for the DMV area. Get a good group of guys together for some fun competition and some cold beers afterwards.
I dont know if more people prefer weekends or weekdays and if people would prefer a little two day event or just a 1 day event to meet up.
Course flyover I posted gives a really cool look at our course if people have never played there before or seen it.
Speaking for myself weekends work better and I think starting at 1 day but I’m local and would be open to a 2 day event if we get enough people. I think getting dates is the most important part to nail down initially
Agree, River Downs (Francis Scott Key at one time) is an awful course. It’s awful.
County and City courses are likely charging cart fees in the Summertime for revenue purposes not for POP. At least not at Pine Ridge LOL.
Fox Hollow is a lot of fun, and I agree on Diamond Ridge. It’s a fun course, played my 2nd round of golf ever there a long, long time ago.
Westminster area is a pretty decent place to head to from Baltimore. Westminster National (I believe it used to be Bear Creek) is a pretty good layout and reasonably priced. Oakmont is OK too.
Still bummed about Wakefield closing, that was a fun place to play. Spent a lot of time playing there in 2001-2002
I played Lake Presidential last year. Fun track, that if I remember correctly has a few really good risk/reward holes and some holes with a lot of slope on them.
I can get some dates in Early May maybe or after Memorial Day weekend and we can get something up and plan a fun day for the NLU gang. For everyone reading this check out the course fly over and just leave if you’re interested!
