Yeah , have been pleasantly surprised with the conditions. Rough is thiccc out there though.
hey brothaāiām in in Santa Monica. Iām down to swing it at penmar every once in a while. let me know if you want to get a round in.
Will be in LA august 30 - Sep 3. Think going to play ranch palos verdes and maybe 1 other course if any refugees are up for a game?
@YipYipHooray hows penmar been recently? Always packed when I used to make it down there. Iād imagine now a days it must be packed.
Not sure if youāve been but Harbor Park reminds me of Penmar but with wider, longer holes and a sweet view of the ravine on a few of the 9 holes.
Looks like thereās been some new people up in this thread. Shoot me a DM is you wanna be added to the SoCal refuge whatsapp chat and I can add you. Solid group of almost 30 now, talking golf and planning games/outings.
First time, long time! Would love to be added to the whatsapp thread.
Sigh.
My idiot friends and I have taken to playing evenings at Westy. Now that itās getting darker earlier and earlier, we have to accept our fate: glow balls.
Anyone know of glow balls that donāt suck?
New guy on the block alert! Up in SCV so I normally stay north county/ventura county since public golf in LA, well basically sucks. Love to get connected with some of you guys!
Not sure if this is the best place for it, but here goesā¦
Going to be in LA for 8-10 hours on a weekday, and potentially/probably without a car. Flying into LAX. (I know, I knowā¦)
If I bring my clubs, where should I play?
And if I donāt bring my clubs, how should I spend my time?
If youāre flying in and out 8-10hrs apart, your only options are going to be Westchester or Alondraā¦ Neither are very good unless you just have to get some swings in. If youāve got the full 10, maybe you can do Rancho Park. Problem is time getting an Uber/lyft to and from the airport.
Without clubs, Iād just Uber over to Manhattan or Hermosa Beach to hang out.
Iād potentially get in at 9am and leave at 7:50pm.
If I rent a car, is it possible to get up to Rustic Canyon and back? If not, is there somewhere else close that I could?
Yes, that is doable for sure in that window.
Tee off around 11:00 and leave for airport by 5.
Worth the drive? Or is there somewhere else youād recommend if I have a car?
If you have time it is a great experience. I lean in on it if youāre comfortable with the drive. I think they have rentals, if your looking to travel light. There are few other somewhat closer, not in that class but get the local muni vibe and may not have rental sets.
Rancho Park - famous city course, site of many famous old school Events LA Open, etc
Wilson - in Griffith park, could pair with a quick visit to the observatory - cool if your first time
Los Robles Greens - recent restoration, sneaky fun layout and conditions have been good
Los Verdes - Some views of the ocean, near Trump Nationalā¦could be a slow round Though
10+ private venues that would be awesomeā¦Iād do Rustic if possibleā¦
Any others @TacoBucket?
@justmuckit getting out to Rustic and back in that timeline with traffic (even COVID adjusted) will be tight.
Are you coming just to golf or do you want more of an LA vibe? Iād do something like Rancho or Wilson if you can get a tee time. Both will be slow but Rancho has good bones and is in the middle of the city. Super close to great food in Culver City and 20 minutes from Venice/Santa Monica and the beach.
Rustic hasnāt been in great condition lately, in my opinion, so I donāt want you to go and pay $75 and then be unhappy. If you want to drive that far, Iād go to Ventura and play Olivas Links. @NineTo5Golf can sing itās praises.
Long shot but if anyone is in the desert I have a single at 12:27 today at la Quinta resort Dunes course. $69. My pal Terry and I are teeing it and just had a cancellation.
Drive time 4 hrs 8 minutes ā¦ even with the time change I donāt think this is gonna happen.
Never played Dunes. IYO how does it compare to the Mountain Course?
Never played Dunes. I think itās a notch below the Mountain in terms of quality.
Definitely got the lesser piece of property.
Donāt know if youāve played Mountain, or what your feelings on it are but I have very conflicted feelings. So many really great holes, but too many of the holes away from the mountains are really blah. That happens a lot at courses like that, but I expect more from Dye. His whole thing was that he was great at building interesting holes from nothing. Thatās what PGA West is (or Sawgrass or Whistling Straits or ā¦ yāknow, virtually all his Florida courses or Palm Springs courses). But 10-13 and 18 at Mountain are some of the weakest holes Iāve seen on Dye courses. If they were better, it would elevate the course so much.
So, I hope Dunes is more like how Dye usually designs on ābadā property and not how he used the ābadā portions of the property that are parts of the Mountain course.
I couldnāt agree more with your assessment.
