Highly recommend Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield
Eagle Knoll would be quite a bit out of the way as it’s about 3.5 hours from Springfield haha.
Well, 2.5, but what other place is decent between the two?
What about in Springfield or in KC?
As our venerable captain @VinnyG wrote earlier in the Great Plains thread:
Sending out the bat signal here! We are in need of one more guy for the Show-Me Showdown next week on Nov 5th at Tanglewood. SHOW-ME SHOWDOWN – Annual Intra-Roost Battle of Missouri – NOV 5th - #462 by scagnetti
Should be a fun and golf filled day! Let @scagnetti or myself know if you can play and we’ll tell you what to do.
Am requesting you be a longtime OR current resident of the KC metro. Transpo very well could be provided to and from Fulton, near Columbia. Let’s kick some Saint Louie ass!
What is the nicest public course in the KC metro area??? And is Firekeeper worth the extra drive west if we wanted to play there instead of in or around KC?
Ignoring the can of worms to say that YES Firekeeper is worth the drive.
I don’t want to get in a debate with anyone on here so I won’t say it’s the “nicest”, just wanted to throw out that Sycamore Ridge is a very good public course in the the southwestern corner of the Metro area.
It kinda depends what part of the city you’re looking to play. Shoal Creek is probably your best bet up north. Sycamore is really good in the SW part of the metro. Ironhorse or Creekmoor are good looks in the SE/South Central. I like Firekeeper a bit more than all of those options, but I personally don’t think it’s worth the drive, but depending on where you’re coming from it might not add that much driving time.
My vote goes to Sycamore if you’re in that area, I’m a big fan of it.
Firekeeper is… okay, especially if you are adding on the drive.
Bumping Sycamore because it should be super crispy right now.
Fore Keeper is awesome but probably only worth it if you’re doing more than just playing one round of golf.
Are there any courses in Springfield MO better than Firekeeper, Sycamore Ridge, Shoal Creek, Ironwood, etc?
We are scheduled to play Saturday at Branson Hills but we may get rained out Saturday morning. Looking to play a really good course somewhere on Saturday before we head back to Lincoln NE Saturday night.
Sorry for all the Qs everyone… just want to play the best course available if we cannot play Branson Hills.
What are your handicaps? I don’t have much experience with Springfield golf but I doubt it’s going to be substantially better than Shoal Creek, Creekmoor, or Sycamore.
If y’all are decent golfers or want a challenging course I’d recommend Sycamore or Creekmoor. If you want a really solid layout that is tough but fair and also pretty well on your way back to NE I think Shoal Creek is the way to go.
Sycamore is def the most unique but also the most penal.
In Springfield, I would still recommend Hidden Valley which is technically outside of Springfield but super fun. Also, someone else pointed out the Rivercut is probably the nicest public course down there.
If you’re down in Springfield, I played Rivercut multiple times back in college, was surprisingly a course I enjoyed! Would definitely play if I was in the area
I always vote for Creekmoor, however if you are planning on this Saturday, Creekmoor is out. We have a 27 hole Ryder Cup style tournament and the course is closed to out side tee times.
Hey KC crew. I’m going to be in KC 2nd week in December for work, and I was going to try to play on Saturday 12/10. Is there even a chance of playing golf? I’m fine with cold, but it is too cold?
Also, I’m sure there’s plenty of info if I read through this thread, but if you want to throw out restaurant recs, feel free. Looking like I’ll be staying at the Intercontinental at the Plaza.
Thanks in advance for the help!
December golf in KC will be very hit or miss (mainly miss), but there is at least the possibility you can still play somewhere if you catch a decent weather day. Courses aren’t afraid to open for play throughout the winter.
I agree. December golf could be 50-70s or 29-40s. Most fairways on courses here are zoysia here so will be browned out but still play fine. Adam’s Pointe in our springs or stone Canyon are bent grass fairways so will be more green if that matters to you
Also restaurants near the plaza: Jack Stack (BBQ standard) and Rye (at very least try their lemon meringue pie it’s insane - for dinner shrimp and grits it’s pretty solid too).
If you have a car try and get out to Harps BBQ in raytown, Chef Js, Char Bar, Slaps (in that order in my opinion) for some new wave KC BBQ joints.
@oski staying at the old bougie environs on south Brush Creek… fantastic digs.
@bpmcelhiney had it right in regards to the courses/weather/availability. However, he didn’t get into the drive/s you’ll have to make. If you don’t rent a car, yer Uber charges are going to rack up pretty quick as the closest habitable course to you is Swope, Hillcrest, or Tomahawk Hills?
Another 5-10 minute drive yields more good stuff, Lady Sykes and Minor Park of course, but also Shoal Creek up north, and the WyCo courses of Sunflower Hills, Dub’s Dread and Falcon Lakes.
Don’t sleep on some of the courses out east either, WinterStone, Stone Canyon, Drumm Farm, and Adams Pointe are worth the 20-30 minute drive. I also happen to believe Royal Meadows to be a fun quick laid-back round and it’s 15-20 minutes from the plaza.
Also of note, book rounds mid-morning as there is invariably a frost delay that sometimes goes on for hours.
As for food, just hit up QuikTrip on main. You’ll be fine.
