Roll Call: KC Area

I don’t know, I haven’t thought that far down the list.

Any course that is unwalkable takes a massive hit in my own personal rankings, but they’re still top half I guess?

Ha. I get it. Between those two and Wolf Creek I have trouble ranking them. I like them a lot, but so many courses in Kansas City built during the golf boom between 20-40 years ago feel similar

Isolating the golf course itself from the club is kinda difficult, but I guess I’d probably take Wolf over either of them just for walkability (though it’s a tough walk). There are some holes out there I thought were bad last I played it like 7 or 8 years ago (12 and 16, maybe 8 and 9), but I do enjoy the challenge of it.

I’ve only played Hallbrook once, but I might prefer it to Shadow.

You said exactly what I’ve been thinking in my head for all of these years, but could never put my finger on it. Nailed it.

I prefer the KCCCs and Milburns over the Hallbrooks and Shadow Glens, even before I knew what GCA was.

I think wolf is great outside of 8 and 16. The conditioning is only getting better now that they have an unlimited budget. As Bicknell says “if its less than $50,000 do it, if it’s more than $50,000 ask me”.

Is 16 the par 5 with the blind tee shot that drops down to the left?

That’s 17 which is a little gimmicky. 16 is the par 4, way uphill dog leg right.

16 is the hole before that.

although I totally forgot about the previous par 5 (14?), that’s horrendous.

the vast majority of KC golf was built to sell houses and it almost universally stinks. Where I’m at is would I put Shadow/Wolf/Hallbrook ahead of or behind Heritage? And I don’t even like Heritage.

I feel like a lot of guys really like Shadow, that fact it’s part of a housing development takes away from it some.

I like shadow too in many ways, but houses are just in play too often (my former boss, a scumbag by all accounts, hit FOUR houses in one round). It just feels like a bigger Falcon Ridge. Great practice facility, and tommy raynor quality waterfall in the CLUBHOUSE.

I don’t care for any of the closing 3 holes at WC. 16 as you say, insane with the mega uphill. 17 i have lost a couple of drives that from the tee appeared to be good to at the very least ‘findable’ and 18 not only is a bear in length but that green is comical (if you like dark comedy) when the pin is left.

My quick rankings…

Golf Course & Practice Facilities:

  1. Shadow
  2. Milburn
  3. National

If walking is a priority:

  1. Milburn
  2. KCCC
  3. Wolf Creek

Zero consideration given for clubhouse and other ancillary BS.

Wolf is doing (and has done) and pretty big overhaul. Course this summer was the best I’ve seen it and they are building a new clubhouse and lodges on site as well. It’s privately owned now and they are putting a ton of money into it.

Re: Wolf Creek.

I am very critical of 8, 9, 12, and 16. They could do well to blow a few of those up and just start over. I actually enjoy 14 and 17.

I’m intrigued to see what Marty has planned for that place. I’m glad he kept on one of the best Supers in the state.

Every course that popped up in the 90’s is just so cookie cutter to me.

Yeah that tee shot on 17 is weird, so many times I am further right and blocked from going for it. You’d think I would start aiming further left off the tee but I’m not that smart.

18 green can be very painful with left pin or front pin if you are above the ridge.

@jayhawker are you a wolf member? I’m getting a very scottsdale national feeling from what I’m hearing is going on out there.

what’s the intended use of the lodges? there aren’t THAT many nationals traveling in that often are there? it’s not like there isn’t adequate lodging available in the area.

Not a fan of 14 at all, but 17 I kinda like. Same with 18.

What all has changed at the course since I played M/G ~2011?

It was definitely a different feel. GPS and speakers now on the carts as well.

18 is the best finisher in the state, one of the best holes period.
