Roll Call: Iowa

Anyone catch the live show last night where @Tron and @Randy claimed Iowa wasn’t in the Midwest? I’m absolutely shook. Has my whole life been a lie?

No. Neither of them has any idea what they’re talking about.

That was pretty disgusting. Trying to argue Pittsburgh as the midwest, but Iowa not. And Ohio? That’s culturally way more east coast than the midwest. The local news has to come on at 10 before you can start talking about midwest.

Here’s video from Cedar Rapids Country Club during the storm: https://youtu.be/vfFghcmGNQ4

Ellis had the clubhouse smashed and lots of damage. Twin Pines and Gardner open but lots of cleanup still to be done. I lost my ball in a downed tree pile the other day, I think it’s playing as ground under repair?

Hey just taking a chance but if anyone’s interested I reserved a foursome Labor Day if anybody wants to join me. I’m going to this place in Geneseo, IL called Sugar Maple at 8am. If you’re interested don’t hesitate to send me a message.

Anybody play The Harvester since it’s been redone?

New member in Iowa - want to say 'allo to everyone! Never heard of NLU before a couple days ago when i stumbled on the Strapped vids looking for Waveland videos on YouTube before my first time there. Ended up getting in 13 before it got too dark btw, and only lost 4 balls. For me on a new course, that wasn’t bad. Anyhoo hello all and shout out to @MrCutHook for showing a noob what room he’s supposed to be in.

I’d be interested in hearing info too. I played it 7 years ago and was massively underwhelmed. Much rather play Riverside.

Does anyone have any info or tips on Brown Deer Golf Club in Coralville? Between my three brothers and I, we do a match each year with my oldest brother and I paired together vs the two younger idiots. The standing bet is the losing team has to caddie for the winners on a round at a later point. We lost last year and will be paying up on our debts on Saturday. Naturally a side bet between my oldest brother and I will surely take place on who can caddy their guy to a win so I’d love any inside info on the course! Thanks.

I just played there Saturday with a couple buddies. It was pretty beat up with all the rain they had last week, but is a fun course. For the most part I think what you see is what you get. Hole one is driveable with plenty of bailout room right. I think lay up on 13, anything short right or left is dead. If you play up a little you can go for the green on 18 pretty safely with lots of room long and left.

Alright Iowa guys I need a recommendation, we are meeting our buddy from Wichita in Des Moines next weekend, where should we play. We are playing Veenker on the way down and TCI on Saturday. The plan was to play Waveland on Friday but they have an event.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Bummer you cant play waveland, such a fun course.

Others I would recommend.

  • Otter Creek in Ankeny, one of my favorites in the DSM area. The wind can really blow out there, but its pretty wide open.

  • The Legacy in Norwalk - Great course, but I have never seen a course harp on you so much about pace of play, i get it, but it has become so constant and annoying I hardly play there anymore, the pace is quick though.

A few with a bit further drive:

  • Honey Creek in Boone, just east of Ames. More of a “hidden gem” but a really really fun course.

  • Coldwater also in Ames.

  • Lake Panorama National - about an hour or little less away northwest of DSM

  • Bos Landon in Pella, about an hour or less south east of DSM

All great courses that you really cant go wrong with. Plenty of other options in the DSM area, but not as fun of coursese.

I have friends that go every year. Been meaning to join them for a couple years but just havent made it happen.

Its nothing too special, but for some reason I really enjoy it. A good amount of really fun holes with a good variety.

They also have a par 3 course on the other side of the lake, I haven’t played that yet, but hoping to add it to the next round I play there.

Only one I’ve played down there is Jester Park which is a little NW of Des Moines, right across the river? lake? from TCI. Nothing crazy, I’m sure there are others that are better and have more street cred, but I enjoyed it, quite a few fun holes I think.

Legacy would be my recommendation but they’re punching their greens as we speak, I believe.

Can’t go wrong with Otter Creek in Ankeny & Honey Creek in Boone is sick if you don’t mind a little car time.

Have fun at Veenker and try not to lose too many balls at TCI!

@GRWhitehead

Saw you had played the harvester recently. Care to give us your thoughts either here or dm?

Given your experience with top tier courses it would be great to get your thoughts. Have a buddy interested in their national membership

Well, I loved it. Hard as hell from the back…we accidentally played the Blues on the front (6,900) and switched the Whites on the back (6,600) – course is in UNBELIEVABLE shape. Like maybe the best shape of any course I’ve ever played. Greens are super true, and were ridiculously fast (13 stimp that day). Some classic holes, but nearly all are really really good. Walkable, but I think I would ride for the second 18 if I played 36. Firm and fast doesn’t begin to describe it. 15-16-17 maybe the best 3 holes in a row that I’ve played in a while.

Only 12 tee times a day, so pretty much never more than 50 rounds per day. Locker room was just redone and it’s very very good. I found the food to be not as good as the hospitality or the experience. I cannot wait to go back. I believe they have lodging avail, but I didn’t ask. If they do (well, if they don’t also) I would get there the night before on a June/July day, and play the next day from dawn to dusk, stay the night, and leave the next AM. Unaccompanied was $300/person.

@jimithng23 played with me and my buddy Pete, so he would have additional thoughts for you.

I am incredibly jealous! Saw your posts on IG looked like a perfect day

I’m unsure if I’ve fully debriefed on the experience at this point.

Purest golf course I’ve stepped foot on… and this course is in Iowa.

Greens were lightening fast. Once adjusted, I really enjoyed the speed.

Many unforgettable shots from the tees and into the greens. Amazing place. Go if you get the opportunity.
