I believe that Grint eneded up having to use a GHIN number this year. I have a handicap at Gus that I just link to my Grint account and I can post to my handicap on Grint or using the GHIN app.
That’s what I was wanting to hear - I’d like to start recording rounds prior to the CC membership in the next year or so - had been using 18 birdies but was irritated there was no way for an official # for the handful of tournaments I play in.
I believe I bought the paid version of Grint to get a handicap but then just ended up downloading the GHIN app and putting my scores in there.
We have a developing situation here where I am playing the best golf of my life. It’s like I’m playing a completely different game than I’ve ever played before. I’m going to continue putting my scores in because it’s the right thing to do but I’m not looking forward to my handicap coming down right before the Texas Cup.
I would actually be interested in finding out how they determine rating/slope for these courses as Tomball is rated pretty low but it’s definitely a lot harder than most of the courses I’ve played with higher ratings as it’s very narrow and has a LOT of trees that are too tall to hit over if you get off the fairway by just a few yards.
There are some folks on here that have actually participated in the rating process who could answer more completely. But my guess is that distance is the biggest driver behind its rating. I also have no idea how recently Tomball was rerated and maybe things have grown in/narrowed since the last time.
Hey friends - move complete, I’m now a Houstonian - and seeing as how I played Gus on a beautiful 82 degree afternoon Sunday, while it was low 40s back in DC, it’s currently feeling like a great move.
Was very impressed by my first round at Gus. Fairways in great shape and pretty firm, greens rolling well, made me pretty excited to have access to a place like that so easily. Didn’t hurt that I made an Eagle on 17!
Still have to work through all the paperwork to get resident access to Memorial, so that’ll have to wait for now, but pretty excited for the public golf available here.
Do any of the courses do a good 9 hole rate? They don’t seem to show them online or offer them for online reservations, but curious if you can get them as a walk up. Sometimes have a couple hours to sneak out during the day on a weekday and would be great to sneak in quick 9 here or there without paying a full 18.
Last thought…is there anyone else interested in a Houston-specific WhatsApp group? Love our Stroh’s family, but finding the existing WhatsApp is so Austin/San Antonio dominated that it doesn’t seem ideal for organizing casual rounds in Houston.
Gus is where its at. Played there on Saturday with some fellow refugee’s and the greens are rolling as pure as I have seen them and are better than Memorial currently.
Most places do twilight rates around 3:00 or even a super twilight at 5:00 but not really an 9 hole rate. If you are a single you can usually just show up to Gus or Memorial from 3-6 and just get on out even though the online tee sheet says otherwise. People just don’t show up sometimes at memorial and don’t cancel since it doesn’t matter and they don’t get their $15 pre booking fee back.
The strohs kinda got added into a pretty tight knit Austin group and the Whatsapp is pretty overwhelming and mostly not related to us Houstonians at all. A few of us meet up to play every now and then for match play or just leisure, so I’m sure we can put together a more casual and less frequent Whatsapp. To that note I am pretty excited about the East River 9 opening this summer and was hoping the Houston group could get some sort of like Week night league going out there.
Would absolutely be down for a weeknight league once East River opens up. As a follow-up, is Instagram it for construction updates on it? Really wishing they’d post more there.
Nice to hear I’m not the only one finding the Stroh’s/Austin Whatsapp a bit too much, haha. Happy for them for what they have going, but I may get around to creating a new Houston group this week and will post it here if I do.
Played Gus again today as a walk-on. Got there about 9:45. Hit a bucket of balls and was on the putting green about 10:45 preparing to give up when a spot opened up for 11:10. Couldn’t have asked for a better day to play!
