Roll Call: Colorado -- @PJM v Colorado Golfers, @PJM only half guilty

Hi All - look for a little guidance if you have a chance to help a gui out! A buddy of mine just bought a place in the Edwards/Eagle area. I’m planning to go out and visit mid/late July and play as many rounds as possible.

My cursory golf search it showing most of the golf near there as private, so the question is 2 parts… how “private” is it really? And are there public options near by that I should be targeting?

Thanks!

I think the 3 Cordillera courses are now semi-private, so you should be able to get on there, although it’s 3 Nicklaus designs so beware. I have a buddy that’s a member there, so worst case scenario he calls in a favor for you.

Havent played them, but there’s the public golf courses in Beaver Creek/Avon and Vail. Keystone also has a few good public courses (Raven, etc), and the Breck public course is great, although pricey. There’s a few others publics out there I think, but I havent played them.

Agree with @jhkaplan on the Cordillera courses, they shouldn’t be that difficult to get on to. Red Sky Ranch has two courses and they alternate between private and public per day, but they are pricey, $250/round I think. Eagle Ranch will be just down valley from you. Lakota Canyon is probably about 45 min away. I think you can get on Frost Creek if you make a call. There are plenty of options if you are willing to drive 45 min to an hour. I haven’t heard great things about Raven’s course conditions over the last couple of years, but I haven’t actually been there. They are all very proud of their courses, so be prepared to pay.

Appreciate the feedback! Thanks guis!

If I can get a hall pass, I’ll see if I can meet you out there. Baby #2 coming July 5th but I haven’t played Codillera in 3 years.

And I need a St Louis BBQ sauce reload by then.

Fazio>Norman at Red Sky Ranch. Both fun mountain tracks.

Fox Hollow may be on fire right now:

:sleepy:

I was there. Shot 40 on Links in 30 mph winds and feeling really good about that and then they tell us as we are making the turn that Canyon is on fire and everyone has to evacuate. It got big pretty quickly with ashes falling in the parking lot. No idea if what they said was true, but it would not surprise me.

Brutal day today. Only played 9 in our Superb Owl shotgun.

Wiiinnnddy

Probably spent more time drinking in the clubhouse. I’m fine with that.

I live up here right off EagleVail muni. It’s a great track although PoP can be a huge issue mid-summer. The replies talking about Red Sky are spot on, great tracks but pricey. Eagle Ranch is an incredible muni and it’s a quick drive if your buddy is in Edwards. Skip Vail’s muni as it’s a flat, somewhat boring layout. Feel free to hit me up when you’re up here if you want any local recommendations or anything. Cheers!

Based on the picture I’ve seen in Twitter, I would not be surprised if it burned a few holes on Canyon. I actually thought links might be the worst hit, but sounds like it won’t be.

I live just outside Glenwood Springs at Lakota Canyon Ranch - it’s not worth playing unless you want to check out as many places as possible. This way Ironbridge is semi-public and pretty awesome. The 9-hole Glenwood Springs course is great and one of the few walkable courses. River Valley Ranch is nice. I play most of my golf at Battlement Mesa which is a little more of a haul from eagle but I love it.

In the eagle area Eagle Ranch is nice and fun as a pure public. Gypsum is less nice but interesting.

Hit me up if you want/need company and I’d love to try and meet up. Especially at Battlement if you head my way.

I actually think Norman is a better design than the Fazio, but they are both excellent. You aren’t playing them unless you know a member/employee or are staying the night at a Vail owned property and it was over $250 5 years ago for hotel guests, so guessing it’s even higher now. I got to play it for $72 due to playing with an employee which was an amazing deal.

Both could be much better if they didn’t go for the lush look. I was playing with an assistant pro and he said all their east coast members that fly in demand the rich Augusta look, so your ball generally doesn’t run much. Such a shame.

Saw something on Fox Hollow’s facebook page saying that burn areas are on the fringes of most holes. So, maybe there wasn’t too much damage? If so, they definitely dodged a bullet.

Sucks for you though, your landing areas are now all burnt.

On the other hand, it will be easier to find a white ball in those areas. I will probably get some better lies, too.

Played Buffalo Run Sunday. 40mph winds came in a few hours earlier than expected. Conditions were not ideal, but it was still fun trying to navigate the wind and keep the ball on the correct hole.

I played at Stoney Creek yesterday and the winds were brutal. Had fun with the absurdity of it, but glad I didn’t take the time to drive to or pay for somewhere nicer.

What did you think of the course? I drive by there occasionally and always mean to try it out.

A good, cheap way to kill an hour or two?

Absolutely. I’ll be interested to see what conditions look like in the warmer months, but have to believe there will always be a bit of a breeze and they do a solid job of mixing up direction on holes to keep it interesting. Greens are small to keep some challenge in it. It’s about everything you could ask for from a cow pasture (said completely without snark). Would also be a great spot to head out for an evening with 4-5 clubs and a few beers.
