Really excited to get out to CommonGround in August for the NLU event! That place is the epitome of what cheap, public golf should be in the US, and it is so frustrating and baffling that places like CG are so uncommon. Love Doak’s private’s and high-end public tracks but I would love to see him take on a few more projects in the vein of CG (I understand it’s unlikely because the fee must be substandard) because our country is in desperate need of more courses like it! Also, really love the caddie program there!
Has anybody played Red Hawk Ridge in Castle Rock or Spring Valley in Elizabeth? We have a family reunion/golf outing the 4th of July weekend and will be making the trip from Iowa. As of now we are scheduled to play both. Would love to hear any thoughts if anybody has played either course.
Have played Red Hawk Ridge many times, it was the first course I played after moving to Denver from Chicago. It’s a fun course, and a good “intro to Colorado/mountain golf” experience. It’s not very long (especially with the altitude difference), and a lot of the holes have rough that funnels everything back to the middle of the fairway. It’s a fun track, not my favorite out here, but you’ll have a lot of fun there.
Probably a good course for the group we will have, very mixed skill levels. I think one of the family members works on the grounds crew there actually.
Its been a few years now but we played the Air Force Academy (cant remember which course) and some random course in Colorado Springs. Was a blast to play in the elevation for the first time, looking forward to getting out there again.
Red Hawk Ridge is kind of a “basic Engh.” Has a lot of the Jim Engh features you see on a lot of his courses with the funneled fairways and trench bunkers, but not as much the quirky blind holes or interesting rock formations that give character to some of his better known designs like Redlands Mesa or Fossil Trace. But it’s a very enjoyable course.
Spring Valley is an interesting course that I know quite well, because it was built on a cattle ranch right across the road from ranch property that my family owned for many years. It was built over the course of several years in the mid-90s in sort of a homemade way but it has come a long way and it’s a pretty good course with some fun holes. It’s in a nice setting, too, with many holes playing along or around a creek that runs through the property. I remember especially liking the back nine, which starts off with holes along the creek, then heads up onto a hill for a little bit before coming back to the creek at the end.
Sup boys! Just got around to hopping in on the discussion after @agroovetoolow got me all in on NLU. I play out at Omni Interlocken and CommonGround for most of my rounds. Just wanted to finally chime in on here.
Welcome sir! An affinity for CommonGround is shall we say, common around these parts and deservingly so! Hopefully we can all get together and play before the NLU event as a little warm up. Maybe a little Ballyneal trip, I know @jhkaplan is in.
Hello Denver area Refugees! With the upcoming NLU event at CommonGround, there has been some interest in doing a meetup earlier in the summer for the locals. We can determine the course and the format later, but this post is looking to find a date that suites most people. If you are interested, would you be available either 7/13 or 7/14?
Hey All! Just signing on for a quick intro. My first season back in CO after spending the last four years living in the Bay Area. Was a member at CommonGround for a few years before we moved, but now live way south so I now tend to stick mainly to Castle Rock/Centennial/Parker area courses.
@HypnoChameleon@PJM Looks like the 13th/14th might be a bad weekend overall, we’ll wait a couple extra days for people to show their interest and then we can find a better date for the masses.
That’s probably the only weekend in July I can do it. August availability should be better. I’d be game to do a refuge meetup trip at the web.com event that weekend too
