Roll Call “Chicago” (Part 2)

Reading through your history made me think if it was just 5-10 years later, someone could look at the success of remote coastal spots like Bandon, etc. and think about the possibility here of shoreline/ravine golf in the Chicago area (the phrase “fingers of sand dunes” had my attention). Alas, it was probably just a few years too early for anyone to have the inspiration.

To do it right, you’d have to clear all the trees so the shore is wide open and can be seen widely. And also need at least 2 greens right on the edge - maybe one of them a double that you come back to twice?

I’m obviously not a routing expert, but this property seems really cool and it’s fun to dream. I like your idea of an amazing 9 hole course + a short course.

I would be in on this.

Oh yeah the property screams for a Gil Hanse or Andy Staples or C&C or Keiser to build a sand based course

No that only occurs during the winter, fall, spring, and late spring.

All of those are still alive though! Though I could do a deep dive into one of them if you’d like.
A quick “history tour” if you will…

Played it a lot in my youth as well.

I think I really loved #5, or whatever hole after the par 3 that doglegged right over the marsh.

Also 11, 12 & 13 that came up near the dome.

Wow, surprised this is the first time I’m hearing of Gleneagles’ demise. Played it a few times while living in Darien and Bolingbrook, was pleasantly surprised by the place, a fun affordable walk.

Could use your insight as the Chicago group keeps itself occupied through the winter months by reminiscing over deceased golf courses.

You’re right. My thought is that two of them, DG and Tam, used to be 18 and hosted Tour events.
The other two have interesting backstories from an architectural perspective.
