Roll Call “Chicago” (Part 2)

Am we friends??? Pretty much exactly what happened to me the first time I played that course

We all agree that it’s 5, right?

The par 3? I wouldn’t think that would be as controversial at 4, or 10 if they have chopped those stupid trees down.

I hate 10.
3 iron > 3 wood > 8 iron

Biggest issue w/ 5 is that there isn’t a good bail out. Some of the distance challenged folks I’ve played with have hit SW off the tee on windy days to layup in front of the water and play it as a short 4.

High school tournaments here were truly hell, always a big back up on 5 and 8 tee box. And when they did Monday qualifying for the Korn Ferry event (formerly the Rustoleum at Ivanhoe); imagine playing that tricky 4th hole then walking to the way back tee box on 5 and having to make 6-7 birdies to make it through.

One of my teammates in high school flew one into the hole on 9, it clanked out of the cup and went into the water, he made a 6.

Hello Chicagoans, traveling to the Windy City this weekend and will have Saturday morning to play a round. Any recs for good/decent public golf near the city?y understanding is the golf scene is mostly private, but I figured there’s gotta be some public gems.

Do you have access to a car/how far out are you willing to go?

It is going to be slim pickings this late in the week for anything around the city.

I do have a car and am willing to travel about an hour outside the city. Staying in Wicker Park.

I hear Bollingbrook is a “tour worthy” course…

Played Renwood for the first time in…a WHILE

5 iron and driving iron got a workout - I think I pulled driver four times total
Front 9 just as I remember, lots of short par 4’s and back to front greens (tiny ones at that). Don’t lose the ball off the tee and you’ve cracked the code.

Back 9 gets a LOT more interesting. Much bigger greens, more slope, and a lot tougher to navigate if you don’t have a slinging draw in the bag. Both Par 5’s on the back use some “gimmick-y” tactics to protect reaching the green in two…which kinda stinks. The whole thing just feels like one big lay-up.

Overall for $20 to walk - it’s about as quintessential “Strapped vibes” as one could ask for in the greater Chicagoland area.

For the price, it slaps. But if I have a crisp $20…I think I’m taking it up to Valley Ridge (Antioch GC)

Couple of us have slots open at 11:20 at Heritage Oaks - have never played it but seems pretty standard woodlands fare. Might be too late in the day if you’re looking for a morning time but wanted to flag if you’re interested!

Thanks for the invite! Yeah, unfortunately 11:20 is a bit late, otherwise I would be there.

Does the JB Holmes challenge still exist with the new redesign

Don’t know how ‘soon’ that will be.

EDIT: Oops, thought is was going to be longer than June 1.
