Ravines I’ve only played once for the refuge event and it’s already just outside my top 5. Going back hopefully May 1st. Kankakee Elks I’m going to try and do this summer, but it’s too far to be a Chicago area course imo. Thunderhawk…not sure why but I’m not dying to play there. I do hear good things though.
You’re top 5 is great (haven’t played Bowes though). The rest are my top 4. No need to play Thunderhawk, maaaybe once. But Shepherd’s Crook is more fun, less penal, just as challenging, cheaper, and so close to render travel time moot. Thunderhawk’s fine, but the others are better and cheaper
This is the correct take on Shepard’s v. Thunderhawk.
I’m telling ya, we need a 36 hole event where we play each of these the same day.
With post round dinner at The Shanty
Post round bev in the rocking chairs at Shep Crook was pretty nice experience in the fall, watching approach shots on 18 in 30+ mph crosswind.
If that golf course was on Lake Michigan, it would be $250 a round.
Criminally underrated.
Never been…next Refuge outing??
The Shnooks at the Crook
Get the hook and don’t get shook!
The NLU Chicagoland Waste Management Open.
The NLU Rump at the Dump.
It’s on a old dump, adjacent to active one.
Yes to all three.
We could make a dump rota with all the options in the area.
Man I love Bowes. I’m definitely the most pro-Bowes guy here. It’s not a great walking course though…but neither is Highlands
Do you love golf? Do you also love Jason Isbell? Do you think you’re free on Saturday, August 21st? If yes to all three, you’re in luck!
Isbell is playing a socially distanced show at the minor league baseball stadium by Illinois State that day. You buy a “pod” (8x8 piece of the field) for four, price around $80 a head. As as alum I’d love to make a day out of playing the campus course, grabbing dinner, and then heading to show. ISU’s about two hours from the Chicagoland area and an easy drive down 55 South. Let me know if you have any interest. Looks like this might be the only live music around for a while, Riot Fest and Lolla look doubtful.
that does sound fun, he’s coming to the QC in December after his 3rd reschedule. I still might look into dropping down to bloomington.
Other terrible puns
The Nandina, because it will likely be stinky
The Hopper and The Hawk (if 36 happens)
The Frontloader
The Groot Invitational
The Hackers on the Hillside
Would be into this. Last time I was supposed to see him, I was sick and missed it.
I once blacked out at one of his concerts and woke up in a bush after the show was done. Had to climb a fence to get out but luckily my friend took my lawn chair home with him.
Good times
On another note, does anyone in here ride mountain bikes? I am looking to get out to Palos trails soon and wanted to see if anyone wants to join.
I emailed the shep in Feb about having an outing this fall. They never emailed back. If there’s a lot of interest I can follow up with them again and see about getting something going.
