Roll Call “Chicago” (Part 1)

I am loving this option. I am going to look at it. I have seen SV when we go on our golf trip in June. Did you take a caddy? If so, how much did you end up paying him?

I’ve taken caddies about half the time there. I think I pay them $120 usually.

It’s a great option but fall this year will be hard with Ryder Cup

Per round? If I play 36, I would be looking at $240? I want to present this all to my buddy who I am going with and get the prices to him.

Yeah per round. Have to make sure they all don’t turn to alternative sources of income

Since this is a bigger occasion, I’ll leave off the “Eagle Ridge” 's and Geneva National’s and list a few of the “bigger” trips I have on “The List”…

(Allow me to indulge my inner golf travel geek)

Indiana:

  • “Pete Dye” Trail (Brickyard, Kamper, Fort…Crooked Stick?) - Northern/Mid Indiana
^ Also stop in South Bend for C&C’s Warren Course
  • French Lick Dye&Raynor (36)

Wisconsin:

  • Lawsonia (36) good if you’re keeping it “on a budget”
  • Lac La Belle + Erin Hills (20 min apart)
  • Whistling Straits AND/OR Blackwolf Run + The Bull/The Bog/Fire Ridge (Ryder Cup aside, Blackwolf is worth the trip alone)
  • Sand Valley + SentryWorld on the way up I39

Michigan:

  • Forest Dunes (54 holes + short course? Hell. Yes.)
  • Bay Harbor (27)
  • Tullymore (36)
  • Arcadia Bluffs (36)
^ ANY one of these 4 can be partnered with “The Dunes Club” on the way up or back
  • Greywalls (36)

Hey guys, This year I’m going to have a bit more time to work on my golf game, so I’m looking for some guidance/tips in two areas.

First, I’m looking to get some golf lessons this winter and spring and wanted to see if anyone has any recommendations for people in the area. The instructors at Cog Hill, Cantigny, and Pine Meadow all look like pretty decent options. Has anyone had experience with them? Or are there any other places I haven’t considered?

Second, I’m looking for a course that could serve as a bit of a default place for practice and play this upcoming season. I live in Irving Park, right near the 90/94 split. Ideally it would be a place with a range, short game area, and the ability to play 9 holes. Cantigny would be a great option, but its 40 minutes away from me. I’m fine driving there for lessons a few times, but the distance isn’t ideal for regular practice.

I’m a bad resource for teachers, but Mt. Prospect and the Preserve at Oak Meadows both have ranges and a short game area and are both ~25 minutes from Irving Park. I’m partial to Mt. Prospect myself.

Range and short game you might want to consider Golf Center in Des Plaines. For 9 holes you’ve got Billy Caldwell and Robert Black relatively close

John Andrews is my guy out of Pine Meadow. Outstanding coach, great vibes, keeps the swing thoughts simple.
HIGHLY recommend him.

Little chipping area is free to use at Robert Black, diversey driving range is great cause it has lights and is open late, and you could buzz down to harborside pretty quickly. They have the best public practice facilities close to the city IMO.

More than anything play lots with the sickos on here.

I’m going to put it right on the line. There’s been a lot of complaints already. Fooling around on the course, bad language, smoking and selling grass, poor maintenance. If you out of state guys want to get fired. If you want to be replaced by locals, just keep it up.

That preserve practice area is sneakkkky good.

I’d agree with you all the locals I’ve had as caddies have been top notch. Lots of the seasonal guys are awesome too. Others are sort of caught into a lifestyle/underbelly that the caddie profession either enables or allows them to manage, which can be a good thing, too. I’ve had caddies that fit into this category who are also great. Others take it way too far and it’s uncomfortable. It’s complicated.

Signup below for Lost at the Marsh. Once we have a general idea on attendance we can move forward and reserve a block of times on the morning of 10/16. Input on ideas/formats/prizes/etc welcome. Limiting to 50 but I’ll be surprised if we hit that.

Sounds like a great time, but the two person worst ball scramble sounds like pain.

pain for sure, but I think that’s at least part of the allure of this event since it’s being played at the most infamous public course in the chicago area.

Maybe it’s a worse ball scramble on the front nine that switches to a regular scramble on the back nine for a real ying/yang experience.

We have plenty of time to alter the format.

Perhaps a modified stableford with negative points for water balls

Not a bad track, but #13 is up there as one of the worst holes in the Chicagoland area.

Can we get an alternates tab? (Pending B1G football crowd allowance come fall)
