Roll Call “Chicago” (Part 1)

I’m always down to pop over to 5 iron if anyone’s looking to fill out a group.

Excellent. I’ll get better at tossing out times. Usually there around 9ish or 2ish. We’ve been known to stack times on Fridays…especially now they have buckets of ice cold beers available.

I’m downtown as well (like three blocks from 5i) and also have a propensity to put “networking sessions” on the calendar on Friday afternoons…

Sounds like we might be able to rent the whole damn place out one of these days.

First weekend of March Madness?

I did this last year. Took a half day and booked for 12:30 on Friday, March 13th to watch the Big10 Tournament. Needless to say, I did not watch basketball that day…

Alright boys, need some help. My buddy and I want to do a golf trip for our 35th birthdays. We are looking at Big Cedar Lodge (wanted to play Payne’s Valley) for just under 1k. It is about an 8 hour drive from Chicago. We want to get atleast 3 rounds in and are open to anything that is shorter than an 8 hour drive. Do any of you have any suggestions on resorts or great golf?

I too am about a 10 minute walk from 5i and would be very in on this.

When are your birthdays? If you can go to Sand Valley and rent a place you can do for <$1k. Also Lawsonia is really cheap. Not really advisable before mid-May.

We are hoping to go in September/October. I actually do another trip in June in Nekoosa, WI that is right next to Sand Valley (Lake Arrowhead). Sand Valley looks amazing, but for $325/round that is a little out of my price range.

If you’re able to get the fall rates at Sand Valley you can do it for under $1k for sure.

My suggestions are as follows, and I’d rank all of these above BCL. Just my opinion.

Forest Dunes in Michigan — could tack on Arcadia Bluffs as well. My group is doing this in late September early October. Hoping to hit Dunes Club on the way. This is going to be a bit more because of the Bluffs course price gouging

Sand Valley- if you get the fall rates this will be under $1k if you don’t get caddies

Lawsonia - can do this for about $300 in your time slot, and that’s 36/day including lodging at the green lake inn.

My group usually does a SV/Lawsonia hybrid. After walking 36 at Sand Valley in some questionable weather getting in those carts at Lawsonia is phenomenal.

Sweetens Cove- this is a 9 hour drive as well. I haven’t been but everyone says that it is can’t miss.

Last recc would be a quick easy flight to Raleigh and do Mid Pines/Pine Needles. This could be done for a hair over $1k. Some great old houses right on the mid pines back 9 you could rent. Of course if you are in the sand hills you would be very close to Pinehurst and tobacco road as well.

It’s $225/round and half price for a replay in the same day so $562.50 for 3 rounds over two days. In October rates drop to $170/round so $425 for 3 rounds in two days.

Lawsonia is $155 for an all day pass w/ a cart.

Could mix up Erin Hills, Lac La Belle, University Ridge. It’s definitely worth it to save 12 hours of driving.

The Teddies are in sync here. EH/Lac LaBell is another great recc. Could do eagle springs on way up- 100+ year old 9 holer that is sick. About $20. Or spring valley in Salem, about $25. Just cheap warm ups that are awesome.

Could also do any of the lake Geneva courses on way up.

Erin hills usually has stay and play packages during their shoulder seasons. I’ve done it in May, it’s a great deal. Which means you can play 18 holes, stay on property and play for “free” the next fat. Comes in at about $600. So you went to club at lac labelle after and stayed in a motel or a cheap rental. Did eagle springs and spring valley, you will have played a U.S. Open course twice and three gems for under $1,000, including lodging.

I’m with Teddy, SV has tremendous value if you’re willing to play 36 holes a day and do an AirBnB off campus. And then throw in Lawsonia for sure, maybe play 9 at Eagle Spring on your way back to the the city.

Wisconsin and Michigan are probably top 5 states for public golf (behind NC and OR). No need to drive to southern MO if you haven’t exhausted the options around the Great Lakes.

I like the Sweetens shout if you’re willing to drive that far (availability notwithstanding).

Depends on your priority, if quality golf is #1 it’s hard to beat Wisconsin’s options: SV, Lawsonia, Erin; any of which I’d chose over Payne’s.

Geneva or even Galena are decent options if the quality of golf isn’t the upmost priority.

Either way, option rich and sounds great

If you’re willing to go when SV’s rate dips, which this year I think starts October 4… I think you could drive up SV and play yourself back down to Chicago thru Lawsonia and EH, and still come in less than $1k— or really close. Could do Eagle Springs for s’s and g’a to wrap it all up.

That is a world class trip.

It could be cold, but it also could be 65 and sunny.

This rota has my highest recommendation. Although it is a bit of driving depending on how much time you have.

Since it’s for a special occasion, I would recommend staying on property at Erin Hills, with their new night putting, it is a blast. My first “real” golf trip was EH and we will never forget it. I have a love/hate with their food and beverage program (no food after 5 pm in the pub is egregious) but it’s really quality and fun. At least look into the stay and play deals for October.

You guys are amazing! I am going to look up all of them! Keep them coming.

Definitely not a superior option to those already mentioned, but you could do a Kohler package in the off season and play all four courses + the Bull for maybe around 1k. Also, very convenient if coming from Chicago.

Just wanted to add another option.
