I’m a big dubsdread apologist. I think the difficulty of the course is overstated - it’s surprisingly wide off the tee and they almost never set the pins in the difficult locations. I’ll admit, if you can’t get the ball elevated out of the bunkers I can see how you’d have a shit go of it. It does stink that all the par 3’s are roughly the same length. Terrain is unmatched in the Chicago area, public or private. The whole cog hill complex gives me the warm & fuzzies, I just like the vibe there, old frank included.
It legit just feels like a pro golf venue in every possible way…and that’s a good thing.
Western Opens just hit harder there than anywhere else, and it’s still a crime that Chicago doesn’t have a yearly tour stop (not a playoff event…a regular tour stop)
Having never played Dubsdread, my thoughts on it have been an absolute roller coaster this morning.
Will I get my ass kicked?.. Probably.
Will I have fun?.. 1000% yes.
I’ve never played Dubs but have seen parts of it from a few holes on Ravines. I’m gonna get my teeth kicked in but it’ll be fun.
We’ll probably be able to mess around on the par 3 19th hole after the round and that’s always fun. Last year’s event going down to a 19th hole playoff between a Refugee and a last minute friend of a friend ringer was sick.
Sometimes it’s fun to get your teeth kicked in…which I’m here for with Dubs
And I’m with @PinkPantser , that back 9 is outstanding
as someone who grew up playing courses 1 and 3, eventually growing into 2. Could never really justify dropping $160 plus for what I always assumed was “a well kept parks course” as was astutely pointed out. I now have a reason, and dammit if I’m not excited as hell for what will be the maiden voyage.
This is great. Really appreciate the breakdown. 2020 was the year of quantity golf. 2021, I’m still interested in quantity (I mean, look where we are) and maybe it’s our current weather situation, but want to aim for more memorable rounds. The first time I played The Preserve? That is technically a “memory.”
I’d be in for Dubs, but too close to the Ope-in to pull off.
I’ve only played dubs once and I just remember thinking (re: the par 4’s) “you want me to hit my 4 iron, to a raised green surrounded by bunkers… again???”
I’d like to spin it again though. Think I’ll have to miss this one due to schedule but would dance out there whenever the snow melts.
Y’all got me thinking about Dubs now…
From a 36 hole day (Ravines in the morning, Dubs in the afternoon) in 2017:
Having never played it - but lots of Ravines, couple #1 rounds - these make me pretty pumped.
Cog Hill was a pioneer in featuring farm infrastructure on golf courses.
Played golf with a handful of you this year, so I thought I would give a salute.
After 15 years in the Chicago area, I am venturing back to the Buckeye State to get closer to family.
I’ll be in the Columbus, OH area moving forward, if anyone is in the vicinity at some point and wants to play.
Bummed I won’t get to build on the past year of playing some regular golf and branching out with the other sickos in the Chicago area but such is life.
Hope everyone is staying safe and healthy.
EDIT: Somewhat key detail I did not mention , I’ll still be traveling back for work, so we’ll see how often I can bring the sticks.
Sooooooo you’ll be our official Muirfield Village hookup now…right?
Fingers crossed. There are a few connections I have in the Dublin area but will confirm if those connections include things like tickets.
If nothing else, My wife and I are building a house a few miles NW of Muirfield Village. I would be happy to host people playing golf that tourney weekend. The public golf scene is pretty bleak in Columbus, so we are probably going to join a club. The one we were considering (Tartan Fields), is across the street from MVGC…which would obviously work out well for people visiting, who wanted to play as well as go see the tournament. I’ll keep everyone posted here.
For real though hope the move goes well and you stay safe with your travels.
Definitely need to get more into Ohio golf here in years to come.
What’s up, everybody. New to the group and looking to #getinvolved. Chicago golf junkie, can’t wait to launch em
