Roll Call: Capital District NY

Totally understandable, there is a second “members only” chat that is quieter and we try to keep as golf opportunity focused as possible. I would recommend keeping an eye on the website too because all events and signups will be posted there! www.racdgny.com

Hi all - hoping to revive the only Albany related thread I’ve been able to find. Grew up in Albany but haven’t lived there in 6 years. Hoping to move back within the next 2 years or so and curious of the current state of golf there post covid mania if anyone’s eager to share

Hey there! It’s definitely harder to find a tee time than before, but not impossible. There’s a few guys around here and I’d recommend joining the RACDGNY discord for playing opps and the like, where did you play out of before?

thanks for the quick reply! I worked at Capital Hills in the summers in high school so played there a ton. Family has always had a place in Lake George so many rounds at Queensbury and (more regrettably) Top of the World.

Nice, capital hills hasn’t changed besides getting busier, frear park got a massive upgrade that I haven’t played yet. Generally I try to play stadium if it’s wet, Schenectady muni if it’s dry, and mcgregor if I can drive up to toga

Hi, want to introduce myself. My name is Paul, I’m in Troy. I’m new to the game, first picked up a club seven years ago, but only started taking the game seriously in the last two years.
My unofficial handicap is 28.9. I’ve broken 100 three times this year.
Courses I’ve enjoyed most in the area are: Fairways of Halfmoon, Saratoga National, Orchard Creek and Frear Park.

Would you mind sending me the discord link as well? Saw the message above and realized I wasn’t in.

I’m curious, why regrettably Top of the World?

I only say regrettably because there are some elements to the course that I really don’t enjoy. The dime sized green on 18 comes to mind, but a number of those greens are also incredibly small. I actually do really enjoy the Par 3’s there. 14 is a total gimmick that you only really get to enjoy with a perfect tee shot.

Fair points. I played the course for the first time this October. They were punching the greens on the back 9 and told us we’d have to loop the front twice, but by the time we finished the front 9 they were pretty much done on the back so we played the back too. We were the only ones on the back all afternoon and had a lot of fun. I think we replayed 14 three times to try and hit the perfect drive. The views of the lake from 10 are amazing. But I agree most of the greens are a joke. And the “facilities” are just plain hilarious. But still fun enough that I’d go back in the fall for those views with the leafs turning.

For that type of day it is a perfect course! It’s a great spot to mess around if you have the time and space from other golfers. Can’t argue with the views on the 10th hole, but I do think the course is overpriced for what they offer (1 hole with lake view and subpar facilities). If you’re really looking for a place where you can get that all alone experience on the course I’d recommend the early bird special at Queensbury they run in the summer. I think you can walk the back 9 before 7am for $15 and there are really usually just singles out there.

Thanks for the tip. Haven’t played there yet.

Haven’t been on the board in a while. The Discord chat is where most of the Upstate folks hang out. There are probably 10-12 guys in the greater Albany area now. It’s time to get a few outings together up here. There are 4-6 of us that play regularly from Inness to Sagamore, and a lot in between.

Count me in, I’m in the Capital Region.

Where abouts James? I’m in Saratoga.

Colonie, play out of Shaker Ridge.

Nice! Love Shaker.
