Roll Call: Bay Area Golfers

Hey Guys,

Im coming out to San Francisco for the NFC Championship next weekend. Looking to squeeze a round in while I am there. Looking at possibly playing Pasatiempo but Im not sure the available tee times will work. Any suggestions of other courses that I could play in the area? Thanks in advance

Half Moon Bay Ocean is a good course with excellent views of the Pacific. May be a little soggy due to recent rain.

Corica South/North in Alameda would be a fun 27 hole day if you have time.

Presidio is fun in SF.

Harding is a great course but very steep rate for out of town residents.

Those are the four public courses I’d recommend if only playing 1-2 rounds in the area.

Would also suggest Northwood if you want to make the drive. It also could be a bit soggy, and course conditions aren’t going to be what the others are, but playing in the redwoods is awesome and Russian River Brewery is on the way back.

That said, if you want the best course conditions after the rain, I’d do Corica Park. Sits on 8ft of sand capping, so it drains better than all the other publics.

Hey Team- My wife and I came to the East Bay from DC a couple years ago and I dove back into golf this past year after a bit of time away. Originally from the Chicago area and lived all around, caddied a lot along the way, and really happy to live where we can play all year round. Getting in most rounds at Metro, Corica, and TP (when dry) during the week, and playing around mid-single digits lately. Have a couple fun groups I’m catching on with regularly, but psychotic enough at this point to expand the circle even more as I try to mix in a couple tourneys for fun as well. Looking forward to catching up with you guys along the way!

Hey Jack, nice to meet you, find us here:

https://join.slack.com/t/racdg-norcal/shared_invite/zt-2bn71mxmp-h2ds8JSJH5LuHTgj9NSiGg

Last year, 76 refugees/nesticals joined together in our third NIT qualifier. We raised $11.7k for CASA of Alameda and gave away $3000+ in prizes!

So, we’re doing the damned thing again.

We’ll bring back all the magic from last year–the firm and fast conditions, good vibes, a sweet pre-tournament event, a few career-day scores, a funky format, and helping a local organization near and dear to our hearts.

But we’ll also improve the day based on what we learned last year. This year we’ll be:

1. Working to improve the pace-of-play on tournament day, potentially appointing a marshall for the day to ensure things go swimmingly
2. Using Unknown Golf for live scoring for cost savings and better usability
3. Getting even more sponsors (Last year we had 15, this year we want 18) so we can improve the food, snacks, beverages + increase our donations to CASA of Alameda

The Details

  • Charity: We’ll continue to support CASA of Alameda County. Every child needs someone in their corner. That trusted adult can be hard to find for children and youth facing the complex foster care system. CASA advocates for youth navigating the complex court system. Donations will be raised through raffle tickets, entry fees, and our pre-event meet up. Last year we hit 11K raised thanks to you all and we’d love to hit that number again this year.
  • Course: Corica Park North Course in Alameda, CA. We will be playing 27 holes during the day. The course plans on setting two different pin locations for us. So we’ll be getting pretty creative out there!
  • Date: 4/6/24. First tee time goes off BRIGHT and early (around 6:45 or so) and we’ll play all damned day.
  • Cost: $185 which includes 27 holes with live scoring + breakfast/snacks + a ton of prizes + a donation to our charity, CASA of Alameda County. You can further support CASA by purchasing raffle tickets for $10 each (unlimited amount).
  • Raffle: Raffle tickets are the best way to help out CASA of ALAMEDA. Each ticket is $10 and 100% of the proceeds go to the charity. Sign up for raffle at the same time you submit your registration! Past prizes have included:
    • Giftcards to various spots like Daily Driver, Jersey Mikes, Golf Mart, Dryvebox, NLU, Barrel Brothers, Beer Fridge, and Hopscotch Oakland
    • Free Rounds/Foursomes at Mayacama, Berkeley Country Club, Lake Merced, Richmond Country Club, and Merced Country Club (Merced CA)
    • Swag from True Linkswear
  • Number of NIT Spots: TWO.
  • Format: Two-person teams (by random draw). Since we’re looping the course three times, we’ll do one loop of Fourball, one loop of Scramble, and one loop of Modified Alt Shot.
  • Field Size: 80 players
  • Pre-tournament meet up: Much like last year, our very own rbartod offered to host us on Friday, 4/5 at his bar. Details still pending, but this is another great opportunity to hang with the crew, donate some money to CASA, and get some food and drinks in your system before the golf begins.

So, what now?

To register:

  1. Fill out this form: https://forms.gle/i7pKmNHCyds1wL1E8
  2. Pay Heath within 72 hours of signup ($185 for golf + $10 for each raffle ticket you want to purchase). Venmo (@heathwblack), CashApp ($HWB), Paypal (heath@heathwblack.com)

To sponsor a hole for charity, contact Patrick Burda (@GremlinGolfer or racdgnorcal@gmail.com).

To donate prizes, contact Giles Ochs (@giles or gilesochs@gmail.com or 415-481-8123)

Can’t make it? You can still get some raffle tickets! Feel free to reach out directly to Heath (@hwb or heath@heathwblack.com)

got a logistics question for you all. my brother is an athletic member at the O club and will be up there for work this weekend. He is able to get us a 2pm tee time (not sure which course). I can get on a jumper flight to meet him.

Gut says we won’t finish, but for those that have played there, do you think it’s worth the flight for a shortened round? Should we be concerned about drainage after our entire state got drowned? I’d love to hear some feedback. Thanks!

It would most likely be Ocean. Athletic members can’t bring guests on Lake unless they are on the golf wait list. I would budget about 4 hours to get around ocean on a weekend afternoon +/- 15 minutes (it can get pretty busy with guests at that time). That would leave you finishing about 20 minutes after sunset.

For reference, I played there last weekend–teed off at 1:30 and got about 15/16 holes in.

With respect to drainage, it has been very wet up here recently, but the course generally drains pretty well. It definitely won’t be firm and fast, but will be fine.

According to the tee sheet your brother is booked as a single at 1:50 on the lake course. There are also two spots open right ahead of that at 1:40. Lake should be worth it for sure. I’d be surprised if you didn’t finish.

thanks to you both. I know he was going to call the pro shop to see if I would be able to play lake, but it doesn’t sound like that’s a possibility. I’m tempted to say he should just go it alone so he can experience it, though he will have other opportunities.

No offense to any of the Olympic members here - but ocean is great. I would def play that one with your brother. He’ll have other chances to play the lake. To me ocean is more fun/interesting

Can’t wait to see what Urbina has in mind for it only to later have my dreams dashed by our stodgy membership not allowing him to do anything remotely out of the box with it.

Brother spoke to the pro shop and confirmed no lake for guests. Looks like I’m playing the ocean at 1:45. Still super stoked either way

Is the Cliffs course open right now? Maybe go early and play that 9 before playing the Ocean?

Edited to add a photo I took when I played there a couple of years ago:

I would love to but his work obligations will keep him in miramonte til 1230 so we’lol be pushing it as it is. Just happy to be out there

just popping back in to say it was totally worth it. couldn’t see our approaches into 18 but we got it done. what a place it is.

Jay Blasi on the Fried Egg pod talking about the Poppy Ridge project is worth a listen, and has me very excited for that project.

I may be moving to Santa Clara:

Good morning, a very early one, from the east coast. What are the best value courses in the area?

I’m considering a position there and the possibility of a much longer golf season is a checkbox in the ‘pros’ column but, in the ‘negative’ column, is the all mighty $.

What are folks recommendations for someone trying to balance quality of golf, affordability, accessibility, and the social scene (i.e. a good crew of regulars)?

It’s just money. Move here.

As someone who moved from the north east 9 years ago, I can tell you without a doubt the year round golf thing is absolutely tremendous.

Your definition of ‘affordable’ will prob have to change. Everything here is expensive.

There is a v good contingent of regulars between Redwood City and San Jose. You’ll have no problem in that regard. @giles @bw72 @nuclear_niblick @alby @cachaulo come to mind. But there’s plenty more.

Great Public courses we frequent around the South Bay are Baylands & Cinnabar.

But what I’ve found is almost everyone here is up to explore for golf. Within an hour drive I could give you 10 more spots. Within 90 mins your options are almost endless. And it’s almost all really really good. You could get to Pasatiempo or Monterey and back easily if you wanted. Doesn’t get much better than that.

Anyway. Welcome / hope you make it.
