For any that have played both courses at Half Moon Bay, which do you prefer? Haven’t played either but setting up a round for my brother in the next few weeks, curious which is more enjoyable.
Ocean is my preference. It’s open, has a linksy feel, better views and is generally more fun. The Old is mostly parkland, the last two holes are pretty dang cool. But that’s about it.
I’d say Ocean if you’re only playing one, simply because the setting is incredible. But from a hole design standpoint, I find it very boring, personally. I wouldn’t say that the Old is amazing, either, but it’s not just back and forth the way much of the Ocean is. Also worth noting that you’re not permitted to walk the Old (supposedly to prevent residents from hopping on and off).
Agreed, Ocean isn’t a textbook links but it’s a pretty decent impression. Old is a very ‘meh’ subdivision course for 16 holes with an absolutely spectacular finish.
Ocean > Old in almost every way. That said, Old gets a really bad rep - and having houses on so many holes is a bummer - but it’s a pretty good course too. Drains horribly so that’s worth keeping in mind.
Thats okay, we both have some true links golf experience, so not looking to replicate that in the bay area. I personally favor a more open layout course on 1 plot of land vs one that winds through a neighborhood most days of the week anyways, so leaning ocean.
Corica Park in Alameda has a South course (18-hole Australian Sand-belt style) and a North course (currently 9-holes, traditional links with wonderful undulating fairways and big pot bunkers). The North is a RACDG NorCal favorite, has hosted our Chunks at the Chuck tournament the last three years. You also have Metropolitan Links in Oakland that is a low-key very good track, with stunning vistas of the airport.
Let us know how deep you want to get involved. We have an active roost / local chapter. A raucous Slack channel and plenty of good people to tee it up with.
@GremlinGolfer is our captain if you want to get added to the roost list.
