If you want to add/switch to burritos, La Taqueria is your spot (just remember it is cash only). Side benefit is the Italian bakery next door.
Also, Mitchell’s Ice Cream is a little further but worth the trip. Newbie tip, grab a number ticket as soon as you get there (maybe not needed this time of year).
Ok, I finally made it home. Here are a couple suggestions for ya:
Italian:
Perbacco - Really good stuff. On the pricier side and “fancier” but damn good.
Firenze By Night - In North Beach and a favorite with the locals. If you go on a Thursday there is a very good chance you will see one of our bartenders eating at the bar. The food is good (gnocchi!!) but it’s the people that make it. Sergio is the owner and just a classic. His kids (Paulo and Nadia) are kinda running the show now and just as awesome. Patrick should be behind the bar. If ya go please tell them Tod (from R Bar) says hi!
Sodini’s - Another local favorite and also in the Beach.
Seafood:
Swan Oyster Depot - Just a classic located on Polk Street. This is family run fish shop and counter and a favorite of Anthony Bourdain. You will wait in line and that is just part of the experience. The boys are great and the fish is fresh and tasty. They are only open for lunch and, if you go, check out some of their “off menu” items. I personally like to get a combo Louis with crab, prawns, and smoked trout dressed with the crab fat dressing, Louis dressing and cocktail sauce on the side as well.
Soto Mare - Back to North Beach for this one! Again, another local favorite. If the wait is too long California Fish Market Restaurant next door is another good option. A chef friend went there recently and said it was killer.
Anchor Oyster Bar - In the heart of the Castro this place is awesome! The Cioppino is ridiculous and the garlic bread (I know this sounds dumb) is soooo goood! It was opened in the 70’s and is located next door to what was Harvey Milk’s camera shop.
Tadich Grill - Family owned and just a classic. One of if not the oldest restaurants in the City.
Sam’s Grill - While Tadich may get more fanfare, Sam’s is my personal favorite. Great little bar and perfect for a martini. If you go during the day there is a good chance you will see former Mayor and state politician Willie Brown there. He still likes to be called Mr. Mayor. Anywho, a good friend Peter owns and runs the place. He had a large part is saving it from closure. The seafood is great, but don’t miss out on the hash browns!
Also, next door (you can walk through the door at the end of the bar) is Sam’s Tavern. This is a newer venture from Peter and another good friend and booze biz legend Mark Schackren (I know I spelled that incorrectly). If you get a chance to have a drink with Mark, he will be the one in a sports coat, I highly recommend it.
Ok, that should about do it. If you have any questions or need anything while you are in town feel free to hit me up - 415-336-6683. Glad to help.
Oh, if you are in North Beach here are some of my favorite bars:
The Refuge never misses! Thanks everyone! I will be sure to report back on where I end up, but at a minimum I will be visiting the Wreck Room or R Bar. Cheers!
If you get to the bars… drop my name there! They had better know me. Not sure of my schedule, but if you want to shoot me a text or let me know yours maybe we can meet up for a pop.
