Roll Call: Bay Area Golfers

Thanks fellas. Yea I have Spanish booked as of now but will try the whole 24 hr window thing with Pebble since I’m not staying there, with Spanish being the backup basically. Hoping the forecast somehow improves cuz (like Soly with his glandular issues) I suck in the rain/with wet grips.

Hello, friends. @Waffles and I are looking to come up to Pebble for the US Women’s Open in July. A couple items/questions here.

  1. Any of y’all going? Would love to walk around PB with fellow Refugees
  2. Any of y’all want to play golf with us?
  3. Recs for golf during a Pebble tournament week? Thinking playing in Monterey isn’t realistic. We both have wanted to play Corica Park and are down to start in the Bay Area before heading down to Monterey. Any other spots between the Bay Area and Monterey that we should look into?

Cheers!

I love Corica but personally probably wouldn’t make a trip around it. If you only have a round or two I’d take a look at the Half Moon Bay courses (preferably Ocean) which is on the way if you take the scenic route down to Monterey.

Also take a look at Black Horse/Bayonet. Two good courses on the same piece of property right before you hit Monterey.

I never enjoy saying this but … @Shane is right. Both good options. I guess it’s also worth seeing if there availability at Poppy Hills and/or Pacific Grove but to your point I wouldn’t be optimistic about that.

Totally agree w/ Shane re: Corica and Half Moon Bay. I prefer the Old Course in terms of holes/course architecture, but the Ocean is the one to play if you’re visiting from out of town, because the views are incredible.

ha ha ha :unamused:

Thanks! Yeah I’ll be in the Bay enough other times where playing Corica isn’t incredibly high priority on this trip. Will definitely check out Half Moon Bay and Black Horse/Bayonet. I played Pacific Grove last month and would happily go back but I’m sure it’s crowded. Poppy is a must play for me eventually but probably not the trip to do it on.

Whatever you do decide, check prices now to see about what’s fair. During the pro am week or men’s open week pacific grove changes prices from 75 to up to 300

I’d take a look at Presidio in San Francisco. Fun course with some really pretty holes/some views of the city. Also agree with HMB Ocean.

Played Presidio last month as well. Absolutely loved it. One of my favorite walks ever (and a heck of a workout).

Was afraid of that. Will look at prices but will likely avoid for that reason. HMB looking real good rn.

FWIW if it’s helpful I was down in PB area and Pasatiempo (a must go) this past Friday-Monday and totally dodged all the rain somehow. Very wet out there on certain days, and wind is a big factor there to take into account. (It was 45mph gusts in SF a couple days ago.)

Be optimistic and maybe you’ll sneak in between the rain drops. We did!

Anyone aware of any deals out there right now w/ all the rain? I’m probably dreaming–it’s the Bay Area after all–but thought I’d ask. I’m willing to go out and try to slop around for a few holes but don’t want to shell out ~$150 if it’s going to be miserable and I decide to give up. (Go ahead and call me soft, it’s fine.)

For those of you who have played in our NIT Qualifier, Chunks at the Chuck, in Alameda before…

Sign ups are open for our 2023 iteration! Cross-posting our Roost notice here:

Hear ye! Hear ye! Signups have begun!!!

Last year, 72 refugees/nesticals joined together in our second NIT qualifier. We raised $6500 for CASA of Alameda, gave away $2000+ in prizes, and had so much fun that we’re running it back, y’all.

We’ll bring back all the magic from last year–the firm and fast conditions, good vibes, a sweet pre-tournament event, a few career-day scores, and helping a local organization. But we’ll also improve the day based on what we learned last year. This year we’ll be:

  1. Playing the entire tournament on the Corica North Course
  2. Simplifying the ways we can contribute to charity
  3. Working to improve the pace-of-play on tournament day
  4. Working with more sponsors to provide snacks and beverages throughout the day
  5. Using Golf Genius for both tournament registration and live scoring

The Details

  • Charity: We’ll continue to support CASA of Alameda County. Every child needs someone in their corner. That trusted adult can be hard to find for children and youth facing the complex foster care system. CASA advocates for youth navigating the complex court system. Donations will be raised through raffle tickets, entry fees, and our pre-event meet up. Last year we hit 5.5K raised with an additional $1k donated by Corica Park. We’d love to hit that number again this year.
  • Course: We have reserved Corica Park North Course in Alameda, CA. We will be playing 27 holes during the day. The course plans on setting two different pin locations for us. So we’ll be getting pretty creative out there!
  • Date: 3/25/23. First tee time goes off at 6:55am
  • Cost: $180 which includes 27 holes + breakfast/snacks + a ton of prizes + a donation to our charity, CASA of Alameda County. You can further support CASA by purchasing raffle tickets for $10 each (unlimited amount).
  • Number of NIT Spots: :construction: TBD. Official NIT spots are still being sorted out by NLU. We will continue to work with them to get a clear answer soon.:construction:
  • Format: Two-person teams (by random draw). Since we’re looping the course three times, we’ll do one loop of Fourball, one loop of Scramble, and one loop of Modified Alt Shot.
  • Field Size: 72 spots! Get 'em while they’re hot.
  • Pre-tournament meet up: :construction: Much like last year, our very own rbartod offered to host us on Friday, 3/24 at his bar The Wreck Room. Details still pending, but this is another great opportunity to hang with the crew, donate some money to CASA, and get tacos and beer in your system before the golf begins. :construction:

So, what do you do now?

  1. Register at this link: 2023 Chunks at the Chuck NIT Qualifier Event ::
  2. Send your tournament fee to Heath Black via Venmo or Cash App within 72 hours of sign up. Instructions are on the registration page and in the confirmation email.
  3. If you’d like to sponsor a hole for charity, reach out to Doc Mills (@fullbodyfix or scottamillsdc@gmail.com) for information.
  4. If you’d like to donate prizes to the tournament OR raffle prizes like rounds of golf, reach out to Giles Ochs (@giles or gilesochs@gmail.com)
  5. Can’t make it? You can still get some raffle tickets! Feel free to reach out to me!

Howdy all - I’m a new member to the nest and was hoping to connect with the crew in the Bay Area (SF/Oakland). I’m a member over at Berkeley CC with fellow nest member Jesse Sutz told me about a Slack channel. Thanks much and stoked to be a part of this crew!

Hey @one_eyed_golfer! Welcome! @Durdenball is a great guy. A couple other RACDG members have joined BCC recently as well!

Best place to intro yourself here is the Roll Call: Bay Area Golfers thread. Also, @GremlinGolfer is the guy to get you setup to access the RACDG NorCal Roost thread and the slack thread.

Carmel Valley Ranch is draining well right now and can find some good deals there as well. Fun course, probably want a cart for the back 9. Played there last thursday and puddle on 8 but besides that, great shape.
