Roll Call: Bay Area Golfers

Totally off topic . . . if you were considering having solar installed, what questions would you ask installer(s) and what pitfalls should you most be aware of. With NEM 2.0 set to expire, now seems like the time to do it. Pretty obvious that paying cash for the system is the way to go (rather than a lease situation) and the tax credit is a nice subsidy. Advice?

A friend of mine recently went through it so this is second hand info but he was frustrated with the long wait times and delays…ended up taking much longer than expected due to waiting on so many different parties to get their piece done (permitting, city side electrical work, installers work, sign offs). From a cost standpoint I think it can make sense if you have enough tax credit/subsidies but the payback period for the capital investment is often very long and I’m not sure whether it is something that truly passes through to home value when you sell.

I guess this answer is not really helpful except to say plan for a longer install period and do your homework to see if it makes financial sense.

We did it in last 2021 and we didn’t pay cash, because the loan was very low and it basically amounted to us paying about half each month to pay off the loan as we were averaging in electric bills. We’ve even earned about a $900 credit against future bills heading into the winter.

I’d ensure they understand the current usage and any other plans such as getting a hot tub or an electric vehicle that needs charging.

I’d also ask what they do if there’s, say, a leak caused by the installation which you don’t discover for months until it rained. This happened with us and they were there that day to fix it.

Thank you sir. Good points that I’d thought about and have addressed.

With interest rates having changed since last year, their interest rate was not going to be anything like my home loan (2.25%) unless they embedded it in a higher price. I’m also debt adverse (to an admittedly stupid degree) so am fine paying cash.

Ah good point. We got lucky, I suppose, with a much lower interest rate. I’m envious of that home mortgage rate but at least we’re locked in at a very good 30-year rate. I also am fairly debt-averse, but in this case it was not much of a debate given how cheap it was and that we are still saving money every month.

Gosh, Sharp Park may just return to the sea. That course doesn’t drain in normal conditions. Hole 14 looks like an island hole.

Very very not good

ohh man sharp is gonna be soaked until june or july at this rate. tough scene there, RIP to the HS matches this spring if anybody still sets up home base at sharps

Hope everyone is staying dry-ish… Have posted in the Refuge before as a guest but just signed up for the Nest! If anyone ever wants to play Pasatiempo with me, I get a decent guest rate Mondays to Thursdays! The course is closing for two years in April for a Jim Urbina greens & bunkers project, so play it while you can! Looking forward to getting more involved with the Bay Area group soon!

Will be in Monterey for work next week and planning/hoping to golf. But hearing about all this rain and brutal storms slammin you guys recently (and the pics somebody posted above of MPCC) and supposed to continue for the next week or so. Should I be worried? Will be playing pebble or Spanish bay, the hay short course, pacific grove, and del monte (staying at that hotel).

I mean, it’s gonna rain on you. But you are going to play (checks notes): Pebble Beach, Spanish Bay, Pacific Grove, The Hay and Del Monte. So, you got that going for you, which is nice. Hopefully the winds calm down enough. But I’d call the resort and ask about damage. I haven’t seen anything posted for those courses.

The only one of those courses thats abutting the water is pebble, Spanish and PG both have a road between them and the ocean (doesnt make the views any less spectacular) so I wouldnt worry too much about water damage, just the wind damage. Just bring your best set of rain gear (and second best set) and have a blast. Pebble, spanish and PG are amazing no matter the weather!
