Roll Call: Bay Area Golfers

Hey everyone! Just moved out to Napa in the past couple weeks from the swamp aka Jupiter, FL to do the wine thing. Don’t really know a ton of people over here so would love to try and get some rounds in with some refugees. From the little research ive done Chardonnay GC looks to be the spot to play closest to me but I’m open to play wherever.

Welcome! Quite a different climate than that Jupe Lyfe.

Chardonnay is quite fun, Eagle Vines next door is harder and less interesting but also worth playing. (Note - they all used to be the same property with half of it being private, then it was sold off to make two public courses.)

Closer to you there are some great courses in Santa Rosa that, especially with the awful drought, should be playing well. Bennett Valley is the top of that list. Also some good private courses, of course.

I’m in. Let’s get something together.

Poppy Ridge in Livermore is money

That’s super helpful. Thanks! Gotta check those out. Defiantly gonna try and tee it up this weekend if anyone wants to play.

One thing you’ll soon get used to is, at least in this COVID world, tee times are not easy to get just a few days before. Good luck finding open tee times for this weekend. Wish I could join you but aside from a dawn 9 tomorrow morning, I’m out for golf until next week.

Rancho Solano and Paradise Valley are also great options that aren’t too far from Napa. I’ve bounced around from SF to Hayward to now Livermore and still go up and play those courses from time to time.

And by all means, avoid Napa GC.

Hey Everyone. Got a quick question about some bay area golf. Got a 5pm at harding park. 2 questions actually: 1. will I get around for 18. 2. am I wasting time/money playing it. Looks beautiful but I am quite weary of TPC courses.

I suppose it depends upon how much you are paying for it! It’s a great course, but having grown up in SF and living in Oakland, I’d have a hard time paying full rate. The Bay Area rate wasn’t too bad.

Either way… dress in layers!! It can get a lot colder than other parts of the city!

Hit em well!!

Seems unlikely. Sunset 8:30p. Prob get a hole or two in after. But it’s going to be 4 hr round min.

I really enjoy the course. It’s a great walk. Love the way the trees frame the holes. Always in really good shape. The way the wind hits the holes makes you really think and there are some stellar holes. Stretch from 13-18 is my fav.

Are the greens a tad boring and TPC’d? Yup.

I’m playing today at 2:10p.

I played it a couple weeks ago, and IMO it’s a phenomenal value / course for SF residents (~$90), average value for Bay Area residents (~$150), but I don’t think it’s worth anywhere close to full rack rate ($225+).

The front 9 doesn’t do a ton for me. Feels like a very standard parkland course and the holes kind of all blend together. All that said, the fairway/green conditions should be great.

Its definitely a better 2nd nine (I’d rush the front 9 to the best you can, especially to have a chance to finish 18) and I agree with @fullbodyfix, 13-18 are incredible golf holes. Aim at the bunker on 18 tee, anything left of the pine tree is blocked out by trees to the green. I learned that lesson the hard way, taking a dumb attempt at a Bryson-esqe line.

It wasn’t my fault, of course, it’s my driver that sucks!

Oh, the other thing is they used to have a replay rate that if you can and want to make a FULL day of it is a great deal.

This is why I end up playing Harding over Presidio 9 X out of 10. It’s almost the same price. And presidio, while pretty, sort of stinks IMO.

But yeah, anything over $150 I’d be out on Harding too.

Ooof so that was def the slowest Harding round I’ve played. 2:10p-7p. Tough scene. I was trying to sort out the prob and legitimately I think there are a lot of new golfers out there and the course is hard. Rough is thick. Corridors are pretty tight. Weather is windy / cold. Etc.

Marshals out there not really doing much. Bc frankly I’m not sure what you do about it. #Shrinkthegame

Pretty SF Summer day though :grimacing:

Nice photo! Bummer about the slow play. The rounds I’ve played recently have been with folks who still try to play “quickly” and it still takes 4:15/4:30, which is a bummer. Sometimes it’s their fault, sometimes not. But I miss the good ole days of cruising 18 in 3:30/3:45 easy.

On the flip side I feel (and hope) that all these courses seeing high frequency play and increased rates will pour some money into maintenance and upkeep over the next 12-18 months, so when usage reverts to the mean, the rest of us life-long hackers will enjoy premium conditions for the rest of the decade!

PS I hope that’s not where your tee ball landed on 16… :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

No no. I was playing it ‘smart’. Hit a sweet little iron up the left side with a perfect angle to attack from just 98 yds…then, I hit my only hosel rocket of the month dead right.

Smart.

But yeah - I think you’re right. It’ll spread out eventually.

anyone been to spanos park in stockton? looks kind of neat but it also seems impossible to book a tee time after 3 when the twilight rate kicks in

yes played many times but never after noon. A fun track that’s usually in pretty good shape. Flattest course in the world.

Spanos is a great course. It’s been in good shape all summer. Tough course when it’s super windy. The wind comes off of the delta and normally picks up during the afternoon. You have to be very proactive to get a tee time during their twilight hours.
