Roll Call: Austin/San Antonio

No reason to stay there. The Capitol is a great building to pop your head into if you have 20 minutes.

Suerte for ‘authentic’ Mexican food.

But I’ll let the great @chitwood respond.

Why do I feel like there is a inter-roost match brewing here, @Jdonelson?

Suerte really good. I would stay more on South Congress than South Lamar. @jbpayne32 covers the places to go out, and South Congress has lots as well. By South Congress I mean between Riverside and Oltorf and 4-5 blocks east or west. Most of the action between Nellie and Mary.

And to clarify 6th Street. “Dirty Sixth” is between about Brazos and I35. Tons of college bars, but it can get rough at night (you young people correct me if I am wrong). What we are calling East 6th is east of I35 which is traditionally sketchy but has been gentrified into lots of cool spots. West 6th is basically between Guadalupe and Lamar with some good spots to hit.

Only food place i"d add is actually for breakfast - Snooze Eatery on S. Lamar (about two miles south of the river, it’s an easy uber). Phenomenal breakfast.

Hate to be that gui and split hairs. Not technically local…

Magnolia Cafe (24 hours) for oversized pancakes.

Veracruz Taco for their breakfast taco. :kissing_closed_eyes:

says “hate to be that gui” and then is that gui :).

Yeah, Snooze is denver-based, I believe. Doesn’t matter - it’s fucking amazing.

Also got mad love for Magnolia, can’t go wrong there either.

Actually, the best breakfast in South Congress is Phoebe’s Diner…

I can’t argue this point either.

Oh, The Cavalier on Webberville is exceptional. Cajun/Nawlins roots (owners are from there). Authentic, simple brunch menu that fuqs. Best shrimp and grits I’ve found outside of Nawlins. Worth a trip.

I’ll take “Words never heard in Austin before 2000” for $800

Have you been to Vic and Al’s? It’s pretty amazing Cajun food…the Boudin is excellent, as is the Gumbo

I haven’t, but now I’m planning a trip

Will not regret. Try and go for dinner when they have Étouffée as the special…woah boy

Never heard of it. Need to get there soon.

Snooze stinks. it’s basically slightly fancier IHOP with a liquor license and 45min waits for a table.

Brunch scene in Austin is kinda mediocre tbh, you’re better off grabbing some breakfast tacos and checking out some of the good coffee shops we have in town (Brew and Brew, Greater Good, Mañana, Little Brother, Merit to name a few)

or hit up Cisco’s. old school tex-mex eatery, GREAT migas and other breakfast staples, and don’t skip the biscuits. as someone who spent a few years in the Southeast, they’re some of the best biscuits i’ve ever had. kinda nuts for a tex mex joint to have such good biscuits

Tamale House is also a great hungover breakfast spot, similar tex mex. Paperboy up the street is a bit more normal modern brunch vibes, great coffee

How could i forget Sour Duck. AWESOME patio spot, by the same group that does Barley Swine and Odd Duck, but way more casual and laid back. great mix of cocktails, beers, ciders and coffee. menu is small but deeeeeeep in flavor, and their pastries are awesome

(i’m just gonna keep editing this response as i remember places)

Your opinions are bad and you should feel bad.

ok so what we’ve settled on is a cross-Roost showdown weekend. Breakfast at Ciscos and Snooze, golf anywhere but Falconhead, and dinner at Barleyswine and/or Vic and Al’s.

My wife and I will be in Austin for a month starting this coming Sunday. We rented a house in South Congress close to the South Congress Hotel.

We have restaurants covered (both ducks/barleyswine/ suerte/nixta/suerte/olemaie/buffalina/uchiko/ramen tatsu-ya, etc) but definitely open to other recommendations. It’s definitely not our first time to austin.

Have golf covered too with Spanish oaks, agc, acc, escondido, UT, etc but would love to play with my one interested anywhere!. We are coming from Omaha, Nebraska. Land of CapRock Ranch, Sandhills, Dismal River and Landmand.

How have I been asleep on Cisco’s biscuits? That was the BEST thing about Georgia and North Carolina, the biscuits.

My wife and I are also traveling to Austin, but for a much shorter timeframe. I think it is going to be four days…wait, my wife just said it was five. She said it is definitely five. I’m not sure though so I am writing four.

Anyway, don’t have golf lined up except for a couple rounds with some refuge peeps. Look forward to taking their money. I would namedrop here but they said to keep it on the down-low. Hope I have not said too much already.

I’ve heard great things about Austin’s food scene so I went on Yelp and sorted by price (high to low, obviously). Secured reservations at four different places, wait my wife just said it was five - anyway, we will be eating good in the neighborhood!

Crack on!
