In a weekend about seeing a college football game, zero Atlanta area public courses are worth the time spent in a car to get to any of these places that are in the Atlanta metro area or far, far outside it (The Fields).
My rec is Bobby Jones. If you want an 18 holes course, then do Chastain Park or Browns Mill. But those two are true munis wheras the conditions you’ll get at Bobby Jones will be country club-light versus zero fund municipal.
And if you have possible private connections and want to see what’s possible, the realistic options inside the city would be Druid Hills GC or Capital City Club.
We are spending a week on the east coast. Going to Pinehurst for 4 days. Then myrtle for a night. Driving into ATL from Myrtle. Anything good on the way?
gotcha. so where you stay will dictate the route you take. If you stay near Coastal, you’ll leave through Marion. If you stay further south towards Pawley’s Island, you’ll leave through Georgetown and take a lot of backroads back.
If you stay further South near Pawley’s, you could do a morning at True Blue or Caledonia on your way out. If you’d rather stop somewhere on the way to Atlanta, you could do Aiken GC. Only challenge is it’s kinda right in the middle of the drive so you’ll have to wake up really early, do a 3 hour drive to start, then play, then have another 2.5 hours of driving after it.
My brother is in the MBA program at Coastal and golfs every now and then at the campus course. He’s enjoyed his experience there finishing his undergrad in 3 years
Hit Cherokee Run on your trip into Atlanta. Or better yet play True Blue or Caledonia while you are still in the Myrtle Beach area. Once you hit the Atlanta perimeter there is a golf dead zone unless you are a multi-millionaire with connections.
Me and @BrysonsLats are heading to a wedding in Savannah in late october and thinking of flying into ATL a two days early to try and have some matches. Anyone have any suggestions for that area or in between there and savannah? Would be last thurs/fri of october. I have absolutely no clue about any golf in the ATL or really anywhere in GA at all so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
I would ABSOLUTELY play the GA Southern course in Statesboro on yall’s way down to Savannah. I could prob host you at my club on the Friday - guest fee would be $90. Read up a few posts for other recommendations.
I’d probably recommend just going all the way to Savannah with the extra flight rather than stopping in Atlanta and driving from here. There’s enough in Savannah to do that driving out there late friday (it’s a 4.5ish hour drive) will be exhuasting to where it seems like Saturday will be your one day there and then to do a wedding and drive back to Atlanta… tough IMO.
Rent a car in Savannah and there are several golf options there plus the city to see. You’re 45 minutes from Hilton Head and Harbor Town (or many other golf options). 90 minutes from St. Simons / Sea Island if you want to splurge for that too.
I’d focus on getting to Savannah and branching out from there.
Wednesday night you’re taking a red-eye from California. Add on a connection from ATL to SAV. Get in to Savannah Thursday AM, 10ish maybe. Hotel, freshen up, lunch. 18 holes that afternoon - Bacon Park, Savannah Harbor Club, etc.
Friday - day trip up to play Harbor Town. Dinner/Night out in Savannah.
Saturday - could play another 18 or just sight-see and do some restaurants/bars in advance of this wedding.
Sunday - fly home.
Thats a solid trip. Adding a hamfisted 30 hours in Atlanta and 9 hours of round trip driving not worth it.
