Roll Call: Alabama (Spring Match Play and March Event Info - Post #815)

I like it a lot but it’s only really really standout feature is it’s on the lake. The holes are good, the layout is good but just a course I feel like I could drop on basically any lake in the south.

Someone should invite me to play there so I can see for myself.

Add me to, I’d love to go back…ya know and revisit my ranking.

Willow Point is nice and all, but Wicker Point… now that’s one I’d like to get on.

There has been nothing written or produced about that place… I wonder if they’re waiting until it’s completely grown-in before allowing media or if they just dgaf about it

I think it’s moreso, “We got all the cash we need so fuck 'em” and by 'em they mean the common man.

That’s what I’m thinking. Like Shoal Creek wherein they don’t care about press or being ranked in any list.

I did enjoy my time there. The biggest downsides for me personally were availability of courses and 5pm and later class times. They’ve been putting more and more classes as online only when registering. I was only at the business school so I don’t have any insights into pre-med, med school, or honors college but I’ve heard some good things from friends who went that route.

very interesting! Thanks for that info. Leads me to think there’s a fair number of continuing education or part-time/commuter students?

Also, what types of companies or industries are big for B school grads there?

I may hit you up. I do enjoy a solo walking round but I need to meet some fellow Refugees in person and make some new friends.

We do have ALOT of commuter students. Especially at the business school (Collat School of Business). Most kids in my classes worked part time or full time like myself and quite a few of those “kids” were older students like myself and even into their 30s and 40s.

Most companies in town work with with Collat for internships and jobs. Regions, Alabama Power, Fastenal, and KPMG all have offices or HQs here in town and they ALWAYS had job/internship postings and booths at the Collat career fairs.

Thank you @lostinspace for getting the ball rolling with the list. I can get behind every opinion that has been thrown out so far. I will throw out my private courses list bc I am boujee.

I start by saying there a few private courses I have not played like Vestavia, Mountain Brook, The Ledges, and both the courses in Alex City.
But in my favorite private courses in order are:

1.) Country Club of Bham
2.) Shoal Creek
3.) Old Overton
4.) Turtle Point
5.) Kiva Dunes (Not private, I just love it that much)
6.) Musgrove
7.) Indian Hills

Turtle Point is such an underrated course. When there were tree’s it was pretty tough down the stretch. I’d imagine its not as penal now that most of the trees are gone.

Also S/O Old Overton, a freaking blast of a time there.

Gentlemen, I may or may not have gone too far. In the quest to find the best courses in Alabama and know what courses I should put on my list to hit in 2024, I’ve made a Google Form to compile a definitive rankings.

Below is a link to the form and if you’d like to let your voice be heard, please join in. I’ll give a week or so to allow as many people to fill it out as possible before revealing the results. I’m not claiming to be an expert at this so if you have any issues or questions just throw it out there. I’m just trying to be a man of the people and help The Refuge as a whole.

Also, if we find some hidden gems maybe we can even talk @MerchCzar @Randy @djpie into coming to check out Sweet Home Alabama for themselves. If Strapped is to continue, I’d like to use the results to propose an itinerary.

Lol. I can’t say that I’ve heard you use it but I think this is just more evidence we need to actually get on he course to play soon.

I’ve got a buddy who is a member out there and we’re supposed to go play it sometime this year. From what my four ball partner said when he went to play with him was that it’s a really amazing course but not quite the challenge that Willow Point is.

It was a meeting so you for sure didn’t, but I agree the proof is in the pudding

There’s a few defunct courses on there:
Magnolia GC- if it’s the one in Montgomery, it’s been closed a while
Cypress Lakes- I think this was the officers golf course on Maxwell AFB and it’s also closed
Union Springs CC- not around anymore
