Refuge Book Club: Martyr! A Novel by Kaveh Akbar - TBD

Very lively.

I found this as some points of discussion.

Obviously, spoilers lie in the questions so probably don’t read this until you’ve finished. Also, if folks come prepared with their favorite read of 2024 (whether or not it was published in 2024) that will be fun, too!

Ready for the date to be set ! Interesting read.

Selfishly hoping for 1/22 as 1/29 is the only one I can’t make work in January.

I think that has been a fairly workable date?

Any opposition to getting our re-launch officially set at 1/22/2025?

Pretty sure 29th works way better for me, probably won’t be able to make 22nd. No biggie.

I actually thought we had locked in 1/22. Hope you can make it work, @BeenMacKenzied !

Can we get a moderator to update the title of this thread accordingly? Not sure who to copy in here (in a perfect world @McSchvantz would make this thread have a subject line we could all edit like others are…)

Suggestion for a next book : Dark Wire, by Joseph Cox.

Heard it is a great read.

Would love to join this if it’s not too late. Definitely think I can read this before 1/22. Always looking for new reads and hoping to mix in more casual reading in 2025.

Refuge Book Club open to anyone who wants to join the Zoom, so read away!

@BeenMacKenzied I have “Dark Wire” on my “To-Read” list, agreed it looks great and would be very into that as a book selection…

I think we just lock it in for no need for further discussion :joy::joy:

@OffTheDole Can you update our title of this thread to say “Refuge Book Club: Creation Lake - January 22” …? Thanks sir. I will take a cart instead of walking my next round in honor of your service

Having a slow day at work. Just sat down for a long lunch and banged out the last quarter of the book. Still digesting but I’ve got some takes! looking forward to discussing.

I’m excited to review with everyone

In a way it reminded me of the prior book I had just read Conversations with Friends in that I couldn’t tell if the main character kindof sucked because the author intended them to kindof suck or if the author didn’t realize they kindof sucked because actually the author kindof sucked

Similar feelings for sure. I feel like if it’s intentional it’s some sort of meta commentary that is a little too wink wink nudge nudge for me. Which leads me to feeling like it was kind of just bad character development.

100% with you.

Going back to prior books we’ve read, we started watching INTERIOR CHINATOWN on Hulu and it’s just as fun and completely batshit insane as the book

I finished Creation Lake a couple of days ago - went faster than expected. Not my favorite book ever, but I thought it was well worth the read. Definitely has a few different roads for discussion to head down.

Reminder for our meeting that if possible, would be fun to collect everyone’s favorite (and least favorite?) read from 2024, which doesn’t have to be a book published last year. I will build a Google Sheets to share.

And here is said Google Sheet:

I know I am jumping ahead, but I wasn’t able to fit in Creation Lake for January. Headed to my local book shop soon, did we settle on a February book yet? If not, I’ll hang up and listen.

@BeenMacKenzied suggested Dark Wire by Joseph Cox and there seems to be strong support thus far.
